What do you do when you're injured?
I destroyed my collarbone and shoulder enough that I haven't been able to ride for FOREVER. Can't ride on the streets until?? In order to combat the muscle atrophy, depression and general ennui that sweeps over me everysingle time I see drop bars and skinny tires I'm wondering what everyone else does when laid-up.
And does anyone know a kick-ass physical therapist in NYC?

I shattered mine last year.
First doc said "let nature take it's course".
Had I listened I would have been deformed forever and the nature of the multiple breaks would have taken a Very long time to heal, if at all.
I called every Ortho surgeon in town until I found on that specialized in sports injury.
He took one look at the x-ray and scheduled surgury the next morning.
I got a Ti plate and 8 screws, my shoulder looks and feels normal, my muscles are back where they should be and I was back on the bike in a few weeks.
Oh, and I read a lot of books and watched every DVD the library had.

I feel your pain after my 3rd ACL surgery. Only wishing I was back on the bike right now. Watched a few movies and planning to get rid of more bikes and parts.
Going back to motorcycles soon. Looking for my old AMA stuff.
I will find out someone for you. Dr Toran used to do it (Chiroprator) with alot of bicycle experience. You can go to my massage threapist who can help.

i watched every episode of 6 feet under in just under 2 weeks. Didn't do wonders for the depression of being off a bike, but it sure helped the time go by.

Well, when I wasn’t laying in bed, I surfed the net to read about all the fun people where having on their bikes, which pretty much lead me to hating every able-bodied person at the time , perhaps taking up knitting would have been a better time killer. Recover soon!

I ruptured my achilles tendon in Feb. I was off the bike for a couple of months.
I assembled a new bike from scratch the way I always wanted to do it, part by part with no leftovers from an old bike. It still didn't turn out the way it was planned. But, I was able to be patient instead of taking the first whatever-part that was available just to get me riding ASAP.

work all the muscles you can without stressing the injury (do standing prisoner squats for example to keep legs in shape), but don't over do it

i drank a lot. using straws. also, when i got the cast off, i started knitting again to get my muscles working. while i had it on, i walked everywhere i could to keep my muscles working, and pushed myself slightly every day. try not to let the ennui get to you, though those were def. some dark days for me. not being able to put my own bra on or put my hair in pigtails myself or cut chicken or open cans was very...humbling...
i guess my best advice is to keep moving as much as possible, and try not to let it get to you. read at coffeeshops instead of at home, go to friends for dinner, that sort of stuff. the worst part was the mental stuff.

if you're worried about your legs getting soft, get a trainer (not rollers). you can keep your legs moving, but place very little (or no) weight on your arms.
you can put a big comfy saddle on your bike, position it upright and ride no handed.

let yourself recover fully.
i had a broken collarbone a few years ago, along with a host of other injuries over the years. i've learned that i'm stupid and don't let things heal properly, and it bites me in the ass (nose, hand, foot, collarbone...) later on, repeatedly, painfully.
my suggeston is to read books, get friends to have potlucks at your place, and have new kinds of (possibly adaptive) sex with your partner(s). but not all at the same time. maybe.

I spent about a year and a half cultivating a really nice Dilaudid addiction between surgeries and time in the hospital. Queerpunk's suggestion seems a bit more effective use of spare time, however.
Build a great wheelset - get someone else to detension the spokes for you though.
Have your bike repainted so it looks brand new when you get back on it.
Check out the "what are you reading/listening to/watching" threads and play catch-up.
Those "exercising w/out putting stress on your busted parts" recommendations look really good too.
Edit: if you want to watch Paris-Roubaix 2006, Giro 2006, UCI Track World Championships 2006 , The Hard Road, Road to Paris, etc. I have a suggestion (send a PM if you need me to walk you through it): Bittorrent, demonoid.com.

Also, might I recommend video games? It's a brave new world out there.

if you can still use your legs i would recommend hiking. i disintegrated a piece of my elbow once and had to wear a cast from shoulder to fingers for six weeks. i went hiking two or three times a week. it must have been kind of funny for other people to see.
some nyc area trails.

Heal it right! Video games, long walks, & bars were my answer for my knee the first time. The second time....run a small business, you'll never ride again, plenty of time to heal

I don't know if he's a great PT (I've only ever had to see one) - but I really liked James at RPT on Court St in Brooklyn. Nice guy, knows his ****, and he'll push you to get better.

I injure other people. Misery enjoys company.
But seriously, get yourself a nintendo and videogame it up. A little Zelda action is always a good time.
