1/8 chain folks
yay or nay on masterlinks?
i've never ran 1/8 before and I'm debating on using the masterlink or not.
what do you think?

I thank the good Lord for the Sram power link on my 8 speed chain... for my single speed Crosscheck, at least. There may be other issues for you fixed guys and gals, such as stopping sans brakes. But for simple mashing a big gear up a hill, I've never had any problems. And being able to pop the chain apart without tools when your cleaning is mighty nice.

I think they are invaluable if you change your change your chain a lot... in my case switching from my 18 tooth cog for the street to a 15 tooth cog for the track I have to use two different chain lengths therefore two chains. Super simple.

masterlinks always seem to **** the bed. its always nice to get chain tool saavy and just not have to worry about a weak link.

use the masterlink! pulling out a pin on a pc1 and putting it back in or using some other pin will lead to alot more weakness.

Never had an issue with the many masterlinks I've used.

I'd rather carry a chainbreaker with me than a pair of pliers to take apart a masterlink.

1/8 masterlinks are a beotch to take apart and install, but an allen wrench, screwdrider or your keys should work just fine.

the one that comes with the PC-1 is really easy to take apart with your bare hands. Far easier then the sram 9speed ones I've used.

Failure story:
chain: cheaper KMC 1-1/8", with master link.
Riding down a slight grade on Victoria Dr. I see my girlfriend walking up ahead.
I'm kicking along at a reasonable pace, and I decided to skid past her, and meet her at the corner.
Just as I'm coming up behind her, I try to initiate the skid.
*PANG*
Then my chain wraps up in the spokes, and I topple over the front of the bike due to my cranks reversing direction.
My girlfriend has NO idea what just happened.
Its like I just flew off the bike past her.
I wasn't hurt, and my gf knows I'm clumsy so its alright.
The crappy part was having to replace 4 spokes..
Looking at the master link, the last bit of one pin where the C clip goes had sheared off.

I've a Masterlink on my KMC chain (I went 1/8" because it was pink ). I have no problems opening it by hand, and I have very low hand strength. Just let the chain slacken a little first.
The C-clips will kill you though. Use the figure-8 clip.
