Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

need advice on a possible buy

help: my friend is looking into getting a bike, and looking for cheap-- generally under $500. i'm super stoked for him because he is a good friend and has a sincere interest in getting on a bike that he can appreciate owning, and he wants to come out to races with me and stuff. but, i hardly feel confident enough to make bike-related decisions for myself (without consulting ss/fg of course), let alone other people. he found this tsunami on ebay, and i remember a recent thread discussing those bikes, and how they are some generic brand, not the actual tsunami brand. i want to know if he's going to end up ripped off. also the frame is aluminum and i hear so many people talking down on aluminum i'm not sure if i support him getting an alu frame. opinions from the smarter/more experienced would be great.

i mean. it looks sweet, but what do i know? not enough to determine if this is a bad idea...

ps: i also suggested the fuji track (what i ride... i love my bike, so hey why not suggest it?) and the mercier kilo tt that goes for $307 on ebay. give me your opinions please!

People talk down on aluminum because it's the cool thing to do. It is especially humorous from those who complain about the crank stiffness. Aluminum is a good choice for an all around bike. You can lock it up without worring about scratching the paint, and not have to do all the work required to keep steel from rusting. Further high quality cheapo aluminum frames such as the tsunami, leader, and fetish(which you might also want to check out if this one doesn;t work out.) Dollar for dollar they will ride significantly better then anything you can get in steel. If you think it rides too harsh just put larger tires on it.

In other words go for it.

I didn't notice the lack of brake drilling... That changes the equation substatially unless you freind is too macho for brakes.

not being drilled for a brake is kind of sketchy-- he rides an ss right now and i don't want him to kill himself learning to ride fixed. as far as the measurement goes, that's cool-- he's about 5'10", so it'd probably fit him okay. we will take all this into consideration when buying time rolls around.

i'd also like some professional opinions on the mercier kilo tt. i have a couple friends that started on this bike and are still riding it, but further opinions are more than welcome.
