116 is pretty normal, maybe on the upper end of "normal." I do my usual 10mi commute (almost all uphill, otherwise rolling hills) in about 24-26 minutes.
I need to get a road bike so I can see if I can do it faster geared.

That's a solid time. What's the course like?
With a cadence like that, you could gear up a bit and still be in your powerband. I've been racing a 10.2 TT here in Cincinnati, on a very rolling course which requires a few out-of-the-saddle efforts, and I can turn in a PB of 26.40 on my fixed-gear LeMond. My gearing is 42-15 and my only concession to an aero set-up is a stretched-out fit, due to my using a 140 mm Alter stem on bullhorns.
