Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Heavy Haulin' (BOB content)

I just cannot get enough of this freakin trailer!

Last night was the maiden shopping voyage.
I basically got 3 large bags of fruit. The bag at the front is a 20lb watermelon.
Apart from jacknifing it on the sidwalk in front of the market, it all went smoothly.
Trackstanding is suprisingly easy too.

..and here's the clever hitch mechanism, with 'BOB nutz' over my axle (no slippage yet):

I rode it to work like this today as well, only with my Chrome bag strapped down =D
I'll probably hit up the hardware store this afternoon for a 53L rubbermaid.

Also, I'm going to have to gear down.
41x15 could be dangerous to my knees if I'm not careful.

..and while I'm posting photos, here's my anniversary present from my sweetie.
She must really love my ass!

Yeah, I'm fairly excited.

I saw someone with one of these flying down the MUP with a dog "surfing"
on the trailer.

yeah, hauling stuff on the touring rig is one of my new obsessions. i used to have to grocery shop with a basket so that i wouldn't get too much stuff. now i fill a shopping cart, load it into panniers, tie it to the rack, and go.

chicago's full of people who deliver stuff on trailers or have highly practical grocery getting bobs.

Awesome.
I'm so joining that flickr group.

I think the next thing I need is a 53L rubbermaid bin, so I can fill it with ice and beer for thursday's work bbq.

I added a pic to your group of me hauling 4 frames and some wheels in my kid trailer a few weekends ago. When the same bike has my panniers on, I can carry 2.5 grocery bags /wo a trailer. I'm personally partial to non trailer transportation.

thats great....I haul my two year old to daycare everyday in a burley trailer pulled by a fixed gear bike (obviously not brakeless!) with a 42/15 ratio. Its not bad, except for one short but steep hill where I really have to stomp on it. Other than being a little harder to pedal, the bike handles basically the same. I can even still skid with it. I also pull the trailer on gravel rail trails with my SS MTB. Naturally, flipflop hubs are ideal for this sort of thing.

My rear hub is a hollow axle Soma/Nashbar track hub, that is normally held on by track nuts.

I bought the trailer used, and it came with an MTB length skewer that was 'almost' long enough to get through my axle and over my track nuts. Not quite though.

I had to buy these at MEC:
https://www.bobtrailers.com/accessories/bobnutz.php

They came with some serrated washers as well, so I think they've got a good grip on the dropouts.

I pulled the trailer (with gear) over 50km yesterday, and I am SORE today.
I'm definately spinning a 16T onto the other side of my hub.
Maybe even putting a 40T ring up front as well.
