Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

$99 Fixed gear cyclocross bike at Target.

"Vertical" is the brand that Dynacraft puts on the bikes they sell at Target. I was there yesterday and found the most curious bike.

A road bike with road bike wheels, drop bars, and stem shifters (not seen on a new bike since I was in high school.) and cantelever brakes

And horizontal dropouts. No derraileur hanger. 7 speed derraileur attached via axel nut (also not seen on a new bike since 1979).

Ever single part on this bike was crap. Actually, to call it crap would be an insult to all the fine men and women who earn their livings in the composting industry. The drop bars were some kind of really weird shape. It had a quill stem with a bolt on the top. The hand brakes did not feel good. Of course, the whoever put the bike toghether at the store was obviously a reject from the snack bar. It was all screwed up.

I just thought it's funny how much we all pine for a cheap bike that we can turn into a fixed gear. And those of us who are interested pine even more for something that will work for singlepseed cyclocross/commuting applications.

And I go and find it in a crap department store bike.

So now, you have the Bianchi San Jose, the Surly Crosscheck, the IRO Rob Roy, the Van Dessel Country Road Bob, and the Vertical Aluminum POS from Target.

These bikes were recalled by Dynacraft because the forks were garbage. I guess you can cross off the Target Vertical...
