Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

NYC, Stolen wheel recovered.

So after a particularly long day at work, I went to meet my GF @ columbus circle for a picnic. At the fountains, we saw some guy on rollerblades holding a relatively high performance road wheel, inspecing it with a suspicious degree of interest (i.e. gods must be crazy).
Even without the rollerblades the guy didn't look like your typical roadie.

Anyway, my GF have been talking all week about bikes and crap being stolen, even right in front of her apartment in the UES. Also, this week at work has been particularly bad in terms of theft. A lot of sad people have been walking in with completely stripped frames. I was also a little inspired by the post here about the couple stopping the bike thief on the street, so I decided to do something about it.
As we rolled out of Columbus Circle, I made a snarky remark to the guy on rollerblades, "yo, that's a really nice wheel."
To which he replied, in effect, that he doesn't ride and "can barely stand up in these [referring to the rollerblades] things,"
So, at the next intersection I roll up to him:

"Hey, Is your name Mark?" (btw, Mark was fictional.)
"No, why?"
"because that's my friend Mark's wheel, and you just stole it from him."
To which he replied, laughingly, "**** you, man."
He turned right...passing directly by the police precinct.

As we rolled by, I yelled to a passing cop "he stole my wheel!", which made the rollerblader take off through the street. I gave chase, caught up with him, and had a very loud and conspicuous fake cell phone conversation with imaginary police giving each intersection we passed through. I told him to hold up and let "mark" swing by and check the wheel out, and that if the wheel was really his that he had nothing to worry about.
He wasn't going to shake me on his rollerblades and started making bizarre excuses. I asked him to tell me what kind of wheel it was, what kind of bike he was riding, etc.. He butchered the pronunciation of the very established company stickered all over the wheel, and couldn't answer anything else right. I kept on tailing him for 10 blocks, keeping just enough distance that if he stopped to confront me that I would have time to dismount the fixie and pull out the mini-U. He turned west to avoid the fake roadblock I had said there was with the police. Midway he just howled something about a Puerto Rican and racism, lifted the wheel over his head and threw it into a flower planter.

I picked up the wheel and took a lap through CP looking for a road bike missing a wheel. No luck.

Sooo, if anyone knows of someone that had a pretty techy wheel stolen, please have them contact me with a description of the wheel and tire. Thanks.

The part where he was trying to pin you as racist was the best.

That would be most hilarious thing ever if it turned out that it was actually his/had a reason for having it and was only scared of the crazy, white bicyclist stalking him all the way home.

Good reason to toss the wheel away if you ask me

It's cool to act on your suspicions
You catch a thief and recover property, that's dope!
You call someone a thief
Who is not
and demand that person provide you with things to prove that they're the owner of item in question
and you ain't the police
you had better be on your tippy-toes

Not saying what he did was wrong
far from it
Just better be sure, that's all.

Don't want to read in the paper one day about someone here getting beaten cause they
too
tried to confront a suspected thief in action only to confront a dude badder than they can handle or someone innocent and uninclined to take their disrespecting bull**** over the course of a few blocks.

and for those wanting to know why I take this kinda view

"keeping just enough distance that if he stopped to confront me that I would have time to dismount the fixie and pull out the mini-U"

The mini-U, you say?
What is that? a bike lock? a lock made out of some pretty heavy **** ..a weapon?
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Kinda stupid.

Ok, all kidding aside, I'm not a very large or bemuscled person at all, and I'm not a goddamn ninja.
The guy was much taller and larger than I , but he was on rollerblades for christsakes. Being able to stand ground in a fight is a major advantage, and while I wasn't chasing him down the street brandishing my lock in the air like a weapon, yea, I had every intention of trying to konk him out with the U-lock if things got really bad. But all this doesn't matter.

I chased after the guy on principle, not machismo.

While I could have gotten hurt if things got confrontational, it was a risk I was willing to take because I was goddamn sick of bike thieves thinking they have total license to steal, even in broad daylight.
To tell the truth, I would rather have taken a punch in the face than to have done nothing at all: rolled my eyes and finished my picnic, before heading to the nearest computer to post catty, frustrated accounts on message boards about how the city is going to hell in a handbasket.

I was inspired by girl anachronism's decision to just do something, anything, to stop a thief. I suggest that other people do the same, whether it be chasing a guy through midtown, or just causing a commotion from a safe distance to make bike thiefs know that they aren't safe through other people's fear or indifference.
