Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

best Street Riders come from...?

In my opinion, I'd have to say that the best Street fixed/track bike riders come from San Francisco. This is why:
1. I live here, so of course id be a little ( or a lot) slanted!
2. Hills, hills, and more hills. Descending on them hills with no brakes can be a challenge!
3. S**T roads ie: pot holes, crackes up the a**, no space, blah blah
4. Horrendous drivers
5. Metro traffic
6. Beautiful paths all around the bay

Anyone else want to drop their thoughts?

Come visit us sometime... You might change your mind about how bad SF is.

From a distance, NY seems like a much tougher environment in terms of skills. Hills require brute force and that's that.

Yes, this is correct if you change "come from" to "live in".

all of those couriers back in the days of streets exclusively paved with cobblestones. i don't care where they geographically came from, but temporally... they were rugged.

Well, since cmwc is held on a closed course I don't think it's really such a good indicator of actual skills in traffic. And yeah, cmwc's not just a fixed thing, though it has seemed like it the past few years.
