I've finally gone over to the dark side--office work. Desk job. Boo.

I miss messengering so bad it hurts.

So I was thinking about my options for night and weekend work. I was hoping some of y'all could offer some suggestions or advice.

I guess my options are:

1) Food delivery
2) Pedicab
3) MaxDelivery
4) Some actual messenger firm that does night and weekend jobs

I have some questions about each of them.

1) Food delivery. How does one secure a position doing this. I've heard people say you just go to Williamsburg and "coldcall" restaurants there. Is this true? Anybody here do this or know somebody who does? Any advice or restaurants to try?

2) Pedicab. This one I think I understand. I just talk to one of the companies and they'll rent me a rig, and I keep the profits, right? Plus, I have to check my dignity at the door, but whatever, that's no big deal for me. Anybody have any suggestions for good companies in New York?

3) Anybody work for MaxDelivery? I talked to somebody who worked for them, and he said they make you use a mountain bike, which I don't got. Any confirmation on this?

4) Are there any messenger firms that regularly have evening and weekend runs?

Thanks a lot folks. Any help would be much appreciated. I need this job I got now, but I can't work only a desk job or I might kill somebody. Somebody you care about.

You could deliver drugs on your bike. It worked for Dave Chapelle in Half-Baked.

i really really really want to have nothing to do with dealing drugs... but if it's the only work i could find on a bike, i think i might consider it

I hate to say this, but give the 9-5 grind a few weeks. Does it suck, YES. But if you got good pay and some benefits that will pay off in the long run. Lunch and break rides are always nice.

i worked as a messenger 4 years ago, a whole summer. Just for fun... and boy it was... I have an office/ computer desk job now... and as a previous post says - I have health insurance and a retirement plan now, gotta compremise somewhere. I bike to work everyday and ride on my days off... peace.

There's a few messenger places that do night deliveries. Check around. As for leaving the office job... do whatever the hell it is that makes you want to get up in the morning. You can always go back to the office job if you want. Life is too short to be wasting away in cubical hell.

I love the look of envy on those office drones faces when I rush past them as they smoke their cigarettes during lunch hour... always makes me smile.

after CI or bust, mrRed, mattsimbols and i watched some kid right in front of us on the sidewalk on a bmx get bagged by a platoon of undercover cops who pulled crack out of his sock while arresting a couple of people in a minivan across the street at gunpoint.

yesterday, my girlfriend watched cops chase and tackle another kid off of his bike in ft. greene because "he had a gun." at least that's what they told my gf after she lectured them about tackling people off of their bikes.

Not all office jobs suck...I guess it's just a matter of finding the right one. My office job is great and always getting better. I wake up early and bike before work and I feel so good all day that the hours fly by...

Do something you love, if you can, it makes life a whole lot more enjoyable.

Love it... I can see myself getting tackled cuz they think I'm a rogue chinese food delivery boy...

Ft. Greene is a weird place... yuppies and hipsters next to the projects and dealers. I live in clinton hill on the edge of bed-stuy and see plenty of shady dealings by bike.

I'm less worried about cops tackling me though than street kids throwing crap at me for fun.

as a fellow desk jockey, it's def not fun sitting inside all day sometimes, but when you get a decent paycheck and health benefits, and enough money to actually pay bills AND have a few beers, it's not all bad.

I love my job since I don't have to dress up and can walk around barefoot all day and have plenty(american standards) of vacation time.

As long as get to ride to work it's all golden, but I get cranky if I have to train it or bus it.

as far as after work messenger jobs go...there's places that'll let you do it, but you won't make any money (if that's the intended purpose) because, as you can imagine, deliveries fall off considerably post 5pm and on weekends.

Get a desk job w/ plenty of field work. I used to have to trek all over the city to different locations for my job. If I was going to the Bronx, I'd get a watermelon from the back of a truck on Southern Blvd. and split it w/ the guys at the Bronx site. If I was out in Bensonhurst, we'd hit up L&B for ices. It was a fun job.

Best desk job I ever had was when I worked at Kozmo.com for the guy who is now the owner/founder of MaxDelivery. He is a great guy.
