everyone misuses that terminology anyhow. for the record it's not the same as being co-opted. it's whoring yourself to try to overcome your diminished popularity.
"The phrase specifically arises from a scene in the hit TV comedy series Happy Days in which one of the central characters, Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli, on water skis, literally jumps over a shark. The scene was written into the show at a point when the viewing ratings were beginning to drop, and it is generally regarded as the creative low-point at which the show finally lost all credibility. A show may continue well after the point when fans feel it has "jumped the shark" but will likely decline in popularity."

Two of my friends walked out on it.
When asked why they bought tickets in the first place they replied;
"We had no idea what it was about, and we're still not sure".
(both are foriegn and missed the whole U.S. fashion flameout that was the 80's)

I don't know what to think, I work in postproduction and we've had that movie here in various forms for a few months. Everyone here at work thought it was bad, but I haven't seen it.
Also, I seem to be the only person I know that thought Collateral was crappy.
Nevertheless, the movie appeals to me in some way. The track bike is a worthy Easter Egg too.

Whoa, so Miami Vice is taking stuff from "Happy Days"? (surely someone else here remembers Fonzi jumping the shark)
