Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Any Tacoma fixies here?

My wife and I are hoping to move out to Tacoma (we'll find out at the end of the month if UWT offers her the job). I was wondering a couple of things, are helmets really required in town? And what kind of gear ranges are people running there? I know it's hillier than where I am now. Thanks,

brent

Tacoma fixie

Hey I just built a fixed/singlespeed for my girl. She is running a 39/16 combo and is pretty confident on all but the biggest hills. She is not a strong climber anyways.

I'm in Seattle (Well, Redmond, right near the Velodrome), myself. I know in Seattle, helmets aren't required, but over in Redmond, they are.

I ran 46/17, before I dropped out the BB on my conversion. Riding a geared full suspension mtb currently, and *no* gear ratio can be as bad as what I'm going through on that.

frequently worn? no. legally required? actually, yes. just rarely enforced, but i do personally know one person who was ticketed. it's comparable to jaywalking in terms of prevalent offenders but few tickets.

i don't know anything about riding in tacoma, but for seattle i ride 42x16 and it's alright. i wish i didn't spin out so easily on downhills, but i'm not strong enough yet to go taller and still climb these hills.

Did not know that; Maybe 1 in 10 people around the U district have a helmet on, and that's normally the commuters. (Okay, so the Burke-Gilman people tend to wear them, but those on the streets don't.)

Good to know.

what's funny is that, like jaywalking, the u-district is the one place that i've heard firsthand of being ticketed. there's something special about seattle police assigned to the ave beat. they have a certain relish for jumping out of nowhere to ticket for obscure things, and i have personally witnessed a bike cop actually say, "aha!" when surprising a jaywalker on 45th and the ave. totally bizarre!

I got sweated the other day by some cops on bikes in westlake for no helmet, no brake, no lights, and goofy handlebars.
