Helmet Fitting question

So right when I got my first road bike, I went out and bought a 30 dollar helmet from performance. I ended up not liking the helmet, so I never wear it! It features road styling, but it seems so bulky on my head.

So I've been trying more helmets out, and I seem to like the Giro Monza. If I'm pretty much between sizes medium and large, is it better to go one way or the other? They both fit on my head, the medium with a little room left on the rear fit-adjuster thing, the large with a lot of room left to bring in the rear-adjuster thing. I like the medium better because it doesn't look so huge on my head, but is it bad to go with the smaller one?

This really made me want to get on the ball with wearing a helmet:

My bike stopped dead and I continued over the bars, going headfirst into a concrete road divider at about 20km/h, with my strapped-in feet pulling my bike along with me.

There is no doubt in my mind that sans helmet I would be dead or a vegetable. I was knocked out for about 5 or 10 minutes and had some pretty bad neck pains for a few months after the accident, but that - other than a few stitches - was about it. So, you know, wear your helmets.

If you plan on riding year round, just make sure you've got enough room to get a skullcap, etc. on underneath.

i picked up this bell alchera during a recent nashbar sale for $31.99 after coupon. i like it a lot, mainly because it fits and breathes worlds better than my old bell citi. my suggestion is try to find a helmet that retails for $80+ and that is deeply discounted, since these things are good for 1 crash.

Another vote for Bell Alchera - Poor mans Ghisallo. Looks and fits like a pro helmet. Just a little heavier. I'm about due for another one as the straps are gettin old and both sets of pads have been worn out - ~3yrs. I think I paid about $35.

once againt the key word here is probably: fit

go to an lbs and try some on.

seriously. if it means spending £60 on a helmet and wearing it, rather than spending £30 and not, i know which one's more valuable.

I'm going to go ahead and throw in my concern in this thread as well, rather than start a new thread when it comes helmet-buying-time... because helmet-buying-time should probably have been nine months ago. I have a slim head, and all helmets, even ones that fit snug on my dome, look like some kind of science project on top of my head. They are huge! Are there any helmets that fit specifically well for dudes with small/slim heads?

Edit: Of course my question is almost identical to the OP's... I'll just keep reading the thread... /idiot
