Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? how much should I pay for this bike?

Guy is offering it to me for $200, is the frame worth that? Looks like pretty much everything else is shot. I'll be stripping it down to the frame and adding IRO parts anyway.

Is this a really good deal, or is it a junk frame and I'm just illusioned because it says "Colnago" on it?

it would be worth that much provided the frame isn't too rusty...

i would pull the seat and look inside the frame to check for rust as well.

and btw if those are old campy record components (or any other old higher end group) hang on to them. they are worth something if they are not completely trashed.

finally, if you buy it, i'd totally use that old crankset it's dead sexy!

wow. So at some point in the life of that bike, it was owned by someone who cherished and loved it.

If you buy it, keep it as is. Grow a mullet (if you don't have one). Buy some brown corduroy pants and some hang ten shirts. Perhaps a members only jacket. Hang some bungee cords off the bars for no apparent reason.

$50 tops. There's a lot of rust on the bike.

Believe it or not, you could probably get most of that rust off with some Mothers. Though, rocking the crusty Colnago with bum bars is a sweet look.
There's an old guy in town here who rides a mid 70's Masi Gran Corsa, full Campy (except the non driveside crank arm is SR) and it's just as crapadelic as this Colnago.
Buy it, polish and sell the good bits off it, and ride it around.

that just needs tires, bartape and a chain.
i'd buy it.

doesn't look that rusty. and the rust that is there looks more like surface rust than anything serious.

the crank already on there is so much nicer than an iro it's not even funny. all of those components are really nice. that frame is not a dime a dozen, it deserves to stay geared. de-bum the bars, new chain & cables, wrap the bars and your golden.

+1 on the mothers.

I always used it to polish all the pretty carbon producing parts on my car and the stuff is damn good. When I scored an old nishiki to convert it had some surface rust on the chrome bits and the mothers took care of all the rust except a few heavily pitted spots. The nice thing is it has a sealer so it does a decent job preventing the rust once its gone.

Remember, it will take you HOURS and HOURS to restore that frame THEN you gotta work on converting it to fixie. That is days, weeks, and months of gathering parts and all that fun stuff. Time is money. Money is money (conversions done right ain't cheap)

What's worse is, you could resotre a bike that has a joint weak from rust or it might have a crack from normal use (or abuse) and it might fail on you.

My vote: pass on the bike. Work hard. Save. Buy exactly what you want. Know what you got. Ride with confidence.

If it's your size buy it and clean it up as others have said. If the components are not toast I'd keep it geared and find a different frame for a fixie. If it's not your size let me know if it's a 54cm

I rode a Colnago Super during the late '70s. Got a custom frame and parted with the Colnago to afford the new frame...wish I could have kept the Colnago though...it handled really well was just plain cool.

the only thing that looks shot on the bike is the chain

it's full campy super record

it would be a sad thing to part the bike out

just clean it and ride it
