I think I might have put together the most pointless bike ever.

I think I might have put together the most pointless bike ever.
With 34/16 gearing and knobby tires, it's pretty damn slow. At the same time, with road-ish geomentry, it's not particularly suited for off-road riding. If I make the gearing much higher, it can't go up hills in the dirt, and with the current gearing it can't go much faster than 15mph on pavement.
It looks cool though, doesn't it?

With a bigger chainring and a flipflop hub you could gain the best of both worlds...

i have my commuter set up as a 40x16 fixed / 40x18 ss flip flop. the 40x18 singlespeed, which is similar to 34x16 is not very useful on the street, but i can see how it would be useful off road.

i cruise at ~16mph around town, do you need to go faster? i've been thinking about getting some beater frame with a more relaxed geometry for when the weather gets crappy. i'd ride that in a second as a winter bike.

try different bars if you're going off-road? I find it very hard to ride off road with drops, but flats are the bomb... or bullhorns.

Maybe I should try the flip-flob hub thing and do 40/18 with 40/16 or something. It needs higher gearing, yet at the same time needs to keep thee current gearing. I didn't even think about a flip-flop hub.

last year i watched a dude win the mens elite in a local cyclocross race on a fixed gear, it was one of the most impressive displays of ass kicking i've seen on a bike.
your bike would rule on local fireroad climbs we have here.

Work is boring as crap right now. I think I'll take it down to the American River Bike Path and ride around in the dirt for an hour or so.

NO LOVE?
At the very least, it's a spinning machine to increase your cadence on the road.
Off road it's a cx handling trainer. Also - try switching the bars for flats as someone mentioned.

my SS mountain bike's running 34x16 (light and fast), my FG MTB's running 36x17 (heavy and fun). both are around 55 inches. both are running 26" wheels & 175mm cranks. if I had your bike with 700c wheels and 170mm cranks, I'd gear it fixed around 60 inches - 34x15. but that's just me. it looks like you have a fun bike there!

SO I jsut took it down to the American river bike trail, which is a paved trail that runs alongside the American river. However, there's a lot of fireroad/singletrack off the paved path (all of which is illegal, unless you're riding a horse, which nobody ever is, so whatever), which is actually a lot of fun on this bike. I just need to find some more flat-ish singletrack that's not too rocky, cause the bike's a ton of fun on that terrain. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anywhere else around like that to ride.
I did about twelve miles as a break from work though, that was nice. Maybe I'll just leave the bike at work and ride it by the river when I get bored.

What really helps is higher bars, so that you can sit down in the drops during the rough stuff. Also, some drops with flare, so that you don't wack your wrists.
there's always a compromise in ss gearing. However, with a ff hub, or a couple of cogs on a casette hub, you could have a road and off-road gear on that thing.
