Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I don't get the fascination with these cheap, off the shelf bikes either.

cheap = I can have one. Obviously if we could afford better bikes we'd be riding them.

it might be nice to be able to just buy a bike for cheap and know that it will do what you want

You dropped a key word from that sentence... vertical dropouts. There aren't that many options for a new bike that is SS/FG capable without an ENO hub. More options = better choices.

I don't love the decals, but it looks like a nice ride. If you stripped it of the Schwinn stickers, it will look just as good as anything else in its price range and of course you can upgrade and modify it at your leisure. In the meantime, it's a fine, servicable bicycle and I can't wait until someone is selling one on Craigslist for $300.

You're right, but the market is flush with older steel roadbikes
with horizontal dropouts, and with quality equivelant to or
exceeding that of most modern off-the-shelf fixies. Of course,
this isn't practical for everyone, since some people aren't
interested in a conversion, no matter how simple it is.

Conversions are only simple and cheap if your time isn't worth much.

On the spec sheet, it says it has a 108 mm BB spindle. Is that going to screw up the chainline? My Langster came off the shelf with the chainring at 45 mm (on the outer position with a 103 mm BB spindle) and the freewheel/cog at 42 mm.

Weight weenie? I've never been called that before but I guess if I'm going to haul 21+ pounds around and not have gears than sure. I haven't been following the newer complete fixes coming out but I think some non plumbing pipe bikes are out there. What about the Cannondale Major Taylor, Specialized Langster?

Whatever though, a deal is a deal-go for it.

the major taylor is no longer offered (i don't think) but i do not believe it was in the same price range as these bikes. it had a Dura-Ace crank which is a bit of a clue for me.
