i need to get fenders. i live in a rainy, rainy town and i am tired of muddy water in my eyes and sewage water up my rear. any experience with these clip on fenders? i hate to have fenders if the ground is dry, so the clip on is appealing. however, i don't want ****t fenders when the weathers real foul.

38's pretty wide, i just realized. i don't know how i feel about that, but i don't know much about fenders. i typically ride 23 and want a tight fit.

with 23's you're going to want a 35mm fender. it looks good.

sks raceblades are the greatest. got a pair recently on ebay and they work like a charm.

If you get one of these racebblade thigies or clipons, be prepared that your BB area and drivetrain will get horribly dirty. That of course accelerates chain and chainring wear.

What's worse, I'm sure you will get some spray rebound off the seattube from the rear wheel onto your trousers.

What's even worse, your shoes will be absolutely soaked if you ride through puddles and stuff. You need a longer fender and a flap to keep your feet relatively dry.

They will keep your body clean, though, which is lot already.

that's one of the main problems i had with my old, 27" fenders(that i got for free). they're huge, and the rear dropped close to the BB area/chain stays where it is supposed to mount (but didn't). the rear fender soaked my shoes in heavy rain. it seemed like all the water kick up was dropped at my feet. anyway around this?

I run a pair of the raceblades, and though they do keep me clean, I've often found myself having to wiggle them around mid-commute after noticing them rubbing on my tires.

...and more adjustable. Slap some electrical tape on those seatstays and your fork if you don't want to tear the **** out of your paint though.

What can also REALLY get your feet wet is if the front fender doesn't go down far enough... A lot of folks put extensions on it (calling them mudflaps) that go down to about 1 or 2 inches off the ground. These do a world of good.

get a cheap "un-dope" garage sale bicycle and put on some full fenders with mudflaps (rear flap too, if you want somone to be able to follow you in the rain).

once you got a nice rainbike with full coverage, regardless how un-dope it is, you'll never ride in the rain without it again. especially once it gets cold....


take your dope bike out on the dry days.

I run Planet Bike fenders on my singlespeed commuter. $10 used from the LBS. My legs stay dry, but I get a little spray on my feet from the front tire.

I've seen two versions though. a shorter set, and a longer set with those dinky mudflaps.

Full fenders for rain, snow, sleet, slush, etc. After getting front tire spray kicked up and into your face, you won't care what your bike looks like as long as you're relatively crud free.

I have those fenders you posted up top there, but on my mountain bike w/ hybrid tires for rain.
the rear one is primo but the front comes loose unless you get it super tight. on there.

not ideal for switching back and forth between rain and not but the rear only would work for taking on and off quickly. and thats all you really need. minus them being too wide for a road bike

also look into the ones that clip on to yourseat post with a quick release.

it you're putting fenders on a fixed, keep in mind how it might effect your toe overlap

if your frame is tight enough to give you overlap, you probably don't have the clearance for fenders. if you can think of something that would work i'd love to hear it.

the bike i rode last year was fixed and had full fenders, lots of toe overlap but i had overlap without them anyway so I had got used to not getting caught anyway.

I had the planet bike raceblade ripoffs.. they worked fairly well at keeping my body dry, but as others mentioned, they didn't have quite enough coverage to keep my feet dry. I invested in a set of cheap nylon cycling booties to wear over my shoes on especially rainy days. The main issue with them though is the fact that the little rubber bits used to attach them to your frame get all dry and crispy fairly quickly and then start breaking. You can always use zip-ties, but then they're not easy to take off/on depending on the weather.

I think I'm going to try and convert my old rigid Giant mtb to singlespeed and put full fenders on it for this coming Winter. Then I can use my fixie for ice racing.

True. It's not a big deal, just something to watch out for, just like normal toe overlap. It was surprising for me when I first realized I had to deal with it.

I had both the sks and the freddy ripoff. I like the freddy alot better. If you don't have fender mounts on your bike, these are the best.
