balck label bike club
a few of us rode our single speeds to a place called SICA in long branch, nj. they sponsor art events, independent films, and have a very nice art studio to boot. as we rolled up, i noticed a guy with a campy hat on. i thought it weird b/c i know most of the cyclists in the area that would be riding single speed/fixies, let alone sporting a campy hat. after further inspection, it turns out they were from the black label bicycle club in nyc. having seen the bike gangs of nyc documentary, i didn't know what to expect. we all enjoyed a free jazz show by daniel parker, robert ryan (of lord sterling) and a few other musicians, followed by a short music/poetry reading by lungfish singer daniel higgs. after the show, we got a chance to speak.
i just wanted to say that the black label guys (greg and ian) were super cool, and it was refreshing to talk to some cyclists, even though they weren't from the area, that have an open mind and similar interests when it comes to cycling. it was also kind of funny that some people were amazed that we rode 7 or so miles on our bikes to see the show. after saying our goodbyes we rode back to asbury park and check out a packed house for the legendary agent orange. free jazz and punk rock in jersey, who would have thought?
