buying a new roadie for conversion?

hey guys, my LBS has a giant OCR3 on sale for about 300 bucks. I was thinking of grabbing it and converting to a fixed. Do you think it's a waste of money and I would be better of searching craigs for a cheap used? hmm.

Is that the new frame Giant started making for SS with the rear dropouts? Or is it a full road setup with derailleurs and all?

If it's the latter, it'll be more trouble than it's worth. Pick up an old steelframe with horizontal drops and convert it. If it's built up as SS, just have your LBS swap out the freewheel for a fixed cog. They'll probably charge for it, but atleast you'll know they'll put it on right.

Personally I don't much care for Giant frames though. Honestly I'd vouch for converting an old bike or just throwing down the extra money on a nicer frame.

I have heard it all.

Why not just buy a new track/fixied-gear? Serious.

That shop wouldn't be in NJ, would it? I'm trying to find a deal on one of those entry level bikes

A few things you might want to consider:

1) Your budget will determine what you get and when you get it.
2) Things are a lot easier if you start with a track/SS specific frame.
3) If money is an issue, you'll get rolling a lot faster if you buy something entry level like a Pista ($500) and upgrade components when you get the cash and/or when you come across sweet deals.

Good Luck.
