Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

things i see around town and hate....

a) singlespeeds with no rear brake. sure, the front is the more important one, but come on...especially in the rainy season, you'll want that rear brake...oh, what's that? you say you've bought your bus pass already?

b)brakeless fixed with platform pedals. especially on bikes with big gear ratios.

and i've only seen this once, but a dude riding something like 50x16 with only one pedal riding circles in a lane in front of a budweiser truck.

come on, people...

I hate people who ride around and make fun of people for riding fixed with a brake. my friend does it all the time. he also rides out of the clips and barely goes above 10 mph.

hmm, things i've seen around town

- college age kids running out into the street from in between cars
- cabbies talking on cell phones
- people opening car doors on busy streets without looking
- drivers yelling at me to get out of the road, or get on a sidewalk
- drivers who honk their horns at me or others when there is no impending danger
- peds who dawdle in front of me in the street because.... it will hurt less than a car if i plow into them?

if the fashionistas who haven't ridden a bike in years, let alone a fixed gear want to ride brakeless, fine. i'm more concerned with the entitlement and ignorance that threatens my well-being on a daily basis.

oh man, the thing I hate the most is when a car is behind you and keeps honking when there is an open lane right next to them! ah. I hate that so much.

Oh wow, I love people who honk, Sers. Yes, thank you for letting me know that I'm riding a bicycle in the street, where cars and things are. I wonder if they really think I've forgotten where I am and what I'm doing and if their honk is going to zap me back to the moment. I definitely hate the useless honk, as if I should immediately skid to a stop at the curb and let the car pass. Jeez, I wouldn't want to slow down a driver.

I can't even begin to discuss the "get on the sidewalk" shout; it makes me angry to even think about hearing someone yell that at me.

Can't we all just get along. Damn aren't there more important things to hate than other bikers. Kinda like what sers says.

It's more safety stuff he is pissed about; let the offenders know. You're saying something just because you are concerned for their safety.

yes - peds running out from in between cars, usually to hail cabbies who are talking on their cellphones

i wasn't trying to say that hce didn't have a point. i was just pointing out the difference between not liking the dumbassery that can lead people to harm themselves and the dumbassery that can harm others.

i must admit that the negligence that i see has been bothering me more lately than ever, really. it's like how can people be that stupid and selfish?

This bugs the hell out of me. The thing that also sucks, of course, is when you're walking & some dude's biking on the sidewalk.

Yes because there is absolutely no way riding an underbraked bike could possibly hurt anyone other then yourself..... Oh wait you're where really just

i dont really hate them... but with the growing popularity of fixed gears... i am scared for
1)suicide hub users with no brakes.
2)new fixie riders that dont roll ther pant leg up or use any other device to restrict their pant.... just bad stuff happens.

I think "hate" is not what you meant, HCE. Perhaps "I am concerned most for" or "I get frustrated by ___ because I want to show them the right way."

I don't hate anyone on a bike - unless it is mine and they just stole it.

- old people waiting for the bus telling me that I should be riding on the sidewalk and I'm going to get killed when I'm waiting for a light to change.
- people who have way nicer gear than me. Unlike in a lot of places, these people are usually good riders and friendly, humble people as well. (aside - the ssfg "trade" thread: You people make me sick. How do people have multiple fancy track frames and njs cranksets collecting dust in their apartments? ****ed up.)

165 is bustin' out the non-violent communication on yo ass.

What was comical, frustrating and tragic all at the same time was having someone shout at me to ride on the sidewalk.... when I was riding on the sidewalk. Just for the record this was when I was rolling up to the door of a bike shop, so it wasn't just like I was cruising on the sidewalk.

Drivers who follow me really closely on one lane streets because they're too afraid to pass me. Meanwhile, I'm hugging the parked cars and praying that I don't get doored. Then, when they finally do pass me, they do it so slowly that I'm stuck between the parked cars and their moving car for what feels like forever.

I know that they're just concerned for my well-being and trying not to hit me, but it's still aggravating. At least they're not flying by with mere inches to spare, though.

Even worse is when the car behind you is leaning on the horn despite the fact that you are keeping pace with the car in front of you.
