which side of spindle goes on drive side?

so i was taking apart my bb trying to figure out why my cranks felt rough and tight when i spun them fowards, but smooth as butter when i spun them backwards (turns out one of the ball bearing cages was broken into about 4 pieces).

So anyway i removed the spindle, not noticing which side went on the drive side. When i look at the spinde, the length from the inside race of the bearings to the tip of the spindle where the cranks attach is about 1" 3/8 and the other is 1" 1/8.
I dont want to screw up my chain line so which side goes on the drive side, the shorter or longer? I am gonna go into my tool box and look for a new bearing, so give me an answer by the time i get back, cause im going riding tonight, oh yeah.

The right side

i just had a problem with this today!
the difference in the sizes of the sides can be hard to tell since they are so small.
anything thats writting on the spindle should be readable if you are standing over the bike looking forward.
so the drive side is at the end of the sequence or "sentence" of letters numbers
i.e...
non drive 34f-v3cvf drive

Great advice. I forgot to check which way "Nervar" was written on the spindle but im sure its the right way, i also noticed if you install it backwards, the short side makes the drive side rub against the fixed cone. So here it is for all to see,

long side goes on drive side (at least on my cranks they did)

i use a campy axle and the short side goes drive side to make my chainline straight. i've done the whole trick where you take everything apart, clean it, regrease it put it all back together the wrong way and then throw the cranks and chain on only to realize the spindle is in the wrong way. aaargh! hate that, so now i always remember that short side is drive side. at least with the axle i use and my miche hub.
