Fatties Fit Fine - tire clearance

I was thinking about getting a surly steamroller (used) as a winter fixed/ss commuter/goofing bike. The main appeal for this is the larger than average tire clearance (I think you can get something like a 40mm tire on them).
Just wondering if there are any other relatively cheap "track" frames with similar clearance? Some frames that come to mind are IRO, pake, biachi pista.

The pista has very little tire clearance. I know some of the iros have quite a bit. Not sure about the pake.

The IRO Jamie Roy and Rob Roy have bigger tire clearances. Any other SS/Fixed Cross bike will have room for fat tires (On-One Il Pompino, Bianchi San Jose, Bianchi Roger, Raleigh One-way, etc.)

The Pake and Soma rush both have 28mm clearance. I imagine the Pista is right in the range. On the Surly sight it says you can get 38mm with room for fenders, so I'd guess you could probably squeeze a little bigger in there, meaning 40mm is probably a reasonable estimate.
I'm not too familiar with the bikes that sivat mentioned, but since theyre sold as complete frames, and I'm preferably looking for frame/fork, I'll probably be focusing my search on the frames I've listed.
I would expect the iro rob roy to have decent clearance, since its cyclocross. I have no idea about the jamie roy, but id think if that had good clearance, the mark v would be similar/same.
Anyway, I emailed IRO about this, and I'm gonna carry around a ruler, so the next Mark V I see I'll measure.

In general what do people think about the mark v instead of the steamroller (I know this has been asked/answered plenty). For some reason I find myself wanting the IRO to not have much clearance, so I'm forced to go with the steamroller. But the IRO is right at the price I want.

Are you set on road geometry? If not, you could get a Redline Monocog 29er frame and put Schwalbe Big Apples on there. I've been kinda wishing I'd done that instead of getting the Spicer standard frame. Skinny tires aren't good for running over kittens.

Old Van Dessels you can fit whatever the hell you want on them, although you're gonna have to deal with toe overlap.

Spicer cycles has aluminum frames with track geometry and space for relatively big tires (~35c) in the rear.
Setting up the chainline can be a bit tricky (track cranks do not clear the chainstays), but i'm otherwise quite happy with mine. Pair that with a cross fork and you're good to go.

Hey, those are my 2 bikes!

Steamroller clearance:
I run 28s (or 25s) with "road style" fenders in the summer, and 32s with a seat tube mounted rear fender in the winter - because the 32s won't fit under the road style fenders - my 32s have a little bit of nub to them, so slicks would probably fit.
I wonder about 35mm slicks with clip on fenders - I doubt they would fit.
I wouldn't buy 40s for the same reason.

The biggest difference between the Mark V and the Steamroller is Bottom Bracket drop.
The Mark V is 5 cm and the Steamroller is 7 cm (I think - check the specs).
So on the Mark V I'm about almost 1 inch farther from the road. This feels like ALOT higher - which is good for seeing in traffic - but my balance is a tiny bit worse on it than on the Steamroller with its lower center of gravity.

Also, beware of IRO sizing - it is a bit "small" - carefully check the specs.
My steamroller is a 53 and my Mark V is a 56.
The mark v is bigger, but no where near 3cm bigger.

k-mart, thanks for the info. I would have thought thered be a bit more room on the steamroller tho, just going off surly's website specs. They say 38mm with room for fenders..
And as for the IRO, is it similar clearance?
Interesting difference in the bb drop. I know its nice to have the extra clearance, but so is lower center of gravity.
How does the 53 fit? I'm looking for a smaller frame, and 53 is usually my 'normal' size. I think 51 would be ideal, but surly jumps from 49 up to 53.
