black 27" wheelset...
My front brake pads are as low as the will go on my 27" wheel right now and I'm looking for a new wheelset for my winter beater... I was considering getting the 700c wheelset from bicyclewheels.com that is so popular but I was hoping to by find some in 27" and if I really had in my way in black.. Anyone know where such a mythical product could be found.. hopefully cheap. :-)

I just finished putting a set of the .com black Formula/cxp22s on my old Raleigh conversion. I had a bunch of brakes from older model bikes that had been scrapped or that I'd picked up at garage sales, but none of them had the right reach (dia compe too short, weinman centerpull too long). This meant going out and getting a tektro longreach caliper (~$35 for the set), which I thought would be the perfect fix. Hmm, oops. It turns out (something I should've considered) that the new tektros are made for new forks--recessed mounting nuts, shorter mounting bolts. So what I ended up doing was taking apart one of the dia compes for its nuts and bolt and installing that in the tektro. Works like a dream and managed to keep it budget with black 700s. Hope this helps.

i changed out 27" with 700c, all you need to do is buy some long-reach calipers, $30 on nashbar. dual-pivot, etc. it's definitely the way to go. +1 about tires, too.

I doubt anyone makes a 27" rim in black. Almost nobody makes a 27" wheel anymore and those who do usually make them look more vintage (no deep vs, no colors, etc)

I think this is what I'll have to do, considering I'm workin with an old raleigh conversion myself.. I just hope that either the nuts/bolts from my current shimano brake or the ones that come with it will work..

go with 700c's if you *really* want black.
and find yourself an old weinmann centrepull. Those things had huge brake reach.

this is like putting an engine that uses leaded gas into your car just because you have a few gallons of leaded gas kicking around. or something.

How so, I'm kinda confused?? I was considering keeping the size I have becuase why change if you can find what you want that find with what you have.. now I'm considering changing size becuase I couldn't find what I wanted.. Anyway I'm gonna go with 700c becuase there are more available cheaper, plus my other bike is 700c so it'll work nicely to be able to use 1 tube size.
IMO it' more like:
It's more like having the leaded engine go in out on your classic car and trying to replace it with another leaded engine instead of replacing it with unleaded...

IMO it's not like gas nor is it like a car. It's like a tire and it's like a bike. 700c tubes work on 27 inch wheels. If you have a 27" wheels, you can convert but you don't need to. Tires for 27" aren't rare, and they aren't great. But it's a beater so who cares? I run 27's on a 700c frame that are leftovers from another fixed. Why didn't i convert to 700c? I want to, but it's a beater and it works.

Tire Choices for 27" are pretty well limited to 1-1/4 maximum width and a roadie type tread. Thats about it. Plenty of them, not expensive and not rare.
I did manage to find some 1-3/8th after months of looking. LBS could not order these.
