Stuck/Sticky Threads in SS/FG Forum
Hey - should these be unstuck? And if so, which one(s) and why?
Thanks for your serious input.

i dont know, but there really needs to be a FAQ sticky that links to all the threads about wheels/ how-to's, budget bikes, how to convert, ect. ect.
i know that doesn't help to lessen the number we have, but it would save a ton of forum space if it existed.

I like:
FG/SS Photos, but could use a good cleaning
Wanna Trade, could also be cleaned
Ebay/Craigslist Mods are good about starting new ones when the old ones get out of hand
Don’t care if it is here or not:
Budget fixed-doesn’t seem like any noob every uses anyways with all of the same questions still popping up. Then we just send them there after chastising them for not searching
LBS/OBS never use that thread at all
Gotta go:
Now Live-its live and the thread is closed. Let it die

i agree with keeping trades, pics, and ebay and ditching the rest. i understand the purpose of the others, but they don't really work in preventing redundant threads

I seem to remember someone doing a thread w/ links to all over the place that could be used as the basis for a FAQ. Anyone else remember this?

Please keep the Budget sticky. It's one of my favorite threads on here, as it actually helps people. I think a conversion sticky would be nice, but it shouldn't be put in with the Budget thread. The conversations would end up all over the place.

While FAQ threads could be useful, long stickies become unweildy, so they don't work for that.
I like the trade thread, and see how the ebay and photos threads might also be nice for those that like to check the last couple of pages from time to time.
Everything else there can and should go.

Well, I for one never look at any sticky except for the pics... but they all seem relevant to the US peeps and I'm so used to them they don't even register in my brain so let them be.

The budget fixed gear sticky needs a new name, such as Bike Reviews or Which new fixed gear should I buy?, and someone should write a FAQ for the beginning. The FAQ should address the most asked question about budget bikes. Some examples are What should I replace on my stock Pista? or Is the mercier/KHS/motobecane/whatever any good?
The problem with some of the stickies is that you can't easily find the information you're looking for unless you know where it's at in the sticky. The OBS/LBS sticky for example would be much easier to navigate if you could click on a state or city and see all the LBS there or just click OBS to see a bunch of those. A wiki would work well for this, but that is beyond the scope of this forum. Since there isn't an effective way to implement the LBS/OBS sticky without having someone spend a lot of time on it, we should unsticky it. It doesn't see much action anyway.
The subforum announcement should stay for another month or so.
I think the others should stay. I can see the arguments for getting rid of the Ebay/Craigslist thread, but people will still post that stuff if there's no sticky. The sticky keeps it all in one place.

this is a good thread that might be able to get incorporated into a faq if it happens

So what if I made one sticky that contained the URLs of the most informative threads here? Thusly reducing the amount of sticky threads to 2-3?
Remember - changes should be made to better the forum, not detract from it. These are not punishments - I want to make this place useful again, or at least moreso than it has been.

I think the "SS/Fixed Shop" sticky could move to the regional sub-forum. There is no way I'm dig'n thru x pages looking for a shop in my area.

[165] I like the way your idea sounds and I think that is what onetwentyeight was trying to start with the thread that lbthomps post above. BUT I think if you are to start this thread and sticky it you also need to lock it. I say this because of two reasons. First, most threads in this forum things veer off track from the original post rather quickly. Which is fun and makes me laugh, but for search purposes it is a pain in the @ss. This new thread would most likely share the same fate and most valuable knowledge will be lost in the pages of internet banter. Second, if people wanted to add new knowledge to a thread, it should be added in the appropriate thread that was linked off of the sticky locked thread you started. This will allow for a higher level of organization. Which I believe is your ultimate purpose.

i used to go to vw vortex alot, back when i was rich and had a car to waste money on... at the top of the forum, there was a FAQ/how-to thread that contained catagorical links to informative threads. it was updated as new stuff was created.
the same could be done here, just make a paragraph for each area of the bike, one for messenger bags, one for conversions, one for reviews, etc.
it'll take a little bit of time initially, but im sure there are people on here (myself included) that would run a search and bump any topics we feel are worthy of contributing. you then, [165] would include them where appropriate. also, if people wanted to immortialize themselves, they could make informative 'how-to' threads with pictures, detailing how to do ****, fix stuff, etc.
if you make one thread like that, it will encourage people to spend their time looking through it, learning everything possible, rather than just asking single, simple questions.
anyway, heres a link to the vw thread, so you get an idea of what i mean.

A stuck and Locked FAQ thread with links to informative threads and websites would be a good thing to have. Of course I realize it would be a lot of work for someone to create such a thread, and it would need to be freshened up from time to time.

Probably. I mean, it's nice, but if you can't find your own ****, that's too bad. I know there are others out there who would love to see the CL/eBay thread die.

I've used the LBS and OBS sticky once, but that's it. I've never looked at the one about races and alleycats since I'm not too interested in it. The pics sticky is something I go to every day. The two threads that I liked was that one a while ago with pictures of where people were riding and the one I started about hubs/wheels (sorry bout the self promotion).
