Even gear combinations

Appologies if this has been done before. I read that even gear combinations, such as 48/18, which my bike shop wants to use, are harder on the "drive train." I can't imagine why. I guess that's not a great combination for skidding, but I don't see that as a real concern for me right now. Is it really a problem to go with even gear combinations?

Hmm, Sheldon claims it's actually better: https://sheldonbrown.com/chain-life.html.

That gear ratio also offers lots of skid patches.

Is there an even gear ratio that doesn't offer a pathetically low number of skid patches? I would figure this out for myself but I'm quite lazy.

Interesting; seems like a trade off between chain wear and skip patches?

What's the big deal about skid patches?

It's not like people are riding these bikes without brakes.

Yep, looks like you can't do better than 10 skid patches with an even-even pairing. I suppose that's not pathetically low though.

skid patches are like boyscout merit badges for fixed gear riders. some gear ratios look funny and give you less cool points or "skid patches", were skidding is like, the ultimate cool of fixies.

There are many threads on this topic, try searching.

A skid patch is a place on the rear tire that contacts the road surface when the legs are locked for a skid. Depending on the gear ratio, different spots on the tire will contact the ground when the cranks are in the same position. The more skid patches there are, theoretically the longer the tire will last because it will wear in many different places on the tire.

Not really I think. Sheldon talks about sprockets=cogs, which wear a helluva lot faster than chainrings. So get an even tooth cog and an odd tooth chainring.
