Bike Co-ops
Have any of you had any experience using bike cooperatives for building/ maintaining your bike? I built my bike at the Bike Church here in Santa Cruz, and they were incredibly helpful, and I learned alot in the process. It's definatley a better option than dropping off a frame and parts at an LBS if you have the time. I would not have been able to build up the bike myself, due to my lack of tools and knowledge at the time. If you have a coop in your area, you should check it out and lend some support.
This thread can also serve as a list of coops. Here's two in Santa Cruz:
The Bike Church-https://www.santacruzhub.org/bikechurch.html
The UCSC Bike Coop-https://bikecoop.ucsc.edu/
discuss.

I'm a mechanic at the Bike Library in New Brunswick, NJ. If it weren't for that place, I'd be a totally different kid right now.

Learned my way around old clunkers and was inspired to start at a real shop. Shout out to Free Ride (https://www.freeridepgh.org/) in PGH and to Gerry Kraynick (https://www.dirtragmag.com/print/arti...egory=features) for telling me to go there!

Working Bikes and West Town Bikes make up the yin and yang of co-ops in Chicago. Bloomington Community Bike Project is a good little co-op down in Hoosiertown, but they need more givers and less takers.

Back Alley Bikes in Detroit MI is a huge part of the (small) cycling culture in Detroit. Great shop.
The Recyclery in Evanston, IL is relatively new and full of great people and a wonderful place to volunteer.
