drunk driver kills cyclist on west side bike path, nyc

a drunk driver drove ON THE BIKE PATH and struck and killed Eric Ng: "Cidron's white BMW hit 22 year old Eric Ng so hard that his "bicycle and one of his black Converse All Stars flew onto the adjacent West Side Highway.""

this is so ridiculous and sad.

This is really sad. I ride by the chelsea piers every night on my way home, around the same time. That could have been me...

I am sad that this can happen, a guy who only wanted to enjoy a ride, in an environment-friendly way.

In Finalnd, bikepaths are disconnected from highways - only rarely they are part of highways. I felt much safer biking in Finland than in any other country. It spoiled me, so now I am not very happy biking elsewhere.

This sucks is no many ways. It's a weird and modern way to feel
connected, but I share MySpace friends with this guy. They are
acquaintances, but it just illustrates the fact that this could so
easily have been ANY single one of us, or any of our friends. He
LOOKS like our friends, he is wearing a chain around his chest,
has tattoos and listens to Lifetime. I will be shocked if someone
here DOESN'T know him.

The thing that shocks me is that a car could even gain entry to
the bike path. Where I live, where bike paths are scant few,
there are still poles periodically, that would prevent a car from
finding its way onto the path. Anytime the path crossed a road,
there in a pole in the center of the ramp to keep motorized
vehicles off. I can't believe that New York doesn't have these,
and I can't believe that New York officials still tolerate these
types of totally unnecessary, reckless and even wanton deaths.

Wow. Usually we don't hear about this many deaths so late in the year. Turns out drivers are being morons all 12 months now. I hope the guy goes to jail pretty hard.

Let's hope the guy in the BMW doesn't end up like the ringtone downloading 19 year old cheerleader with 6 months of semi-probation (she doesn't have to report to an officer) and $1000 fine.

I don't see how these two incidents aren't wanton acts of negligent homicide.

****! Cagers: stop killing cyclists!

(Sorry, that may seem really stupid to say, but I honestly cannot express how angry I am at this and other car kills cyclist situations.)

That's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever read that wasn't posted in the road forum.

And furthermore, yes if someone is so drunk on their bike and they ride headlong into a brick wall, yeah fine, that's life but I don't think stoned drunk bicyclists are running people over and killing them.

Ummm... let's see this logic: since some cyclists ride while drunk or stoned, and subsequently to this they sometimes die, it is OK for car driver to run them over and kill cyclists (any cyclist) on the bikepath.

This is what you're saying.

A band from Asheville, NC played New Brunswick, NJ last night and they were talking about this. They were supposed to play a show in NYC tonight with a bunch of people that knew this guy. They said the show is canceled and everyone is pretty ****ed up over what happened. My condolences.

Man, what a ****ing shame. I've known Eric for about three years now, and he was a really really stand-up guy. We weren't close friends, but we've organized together at NYU for a while, and he was always there to make fliers, sit through endless meetings or deal with crazy ISO folks, always showed up at demos and events, always smiling and joking around. Every time I saw him around he went out of his way to say hi and chat about whatever, he was always kind and quiet, a little shy but hillarious and friendly.

I feel really really weird right now, but I just wanted to say that he was a really nice kid who shouldn't have died in such a senseless and avoidable way. He shouldn't have died at all, this is so ****ed up,
I just want to cry, and I can't even begin to imagine how his family and close friends are feeling.

PS, lapin_marron, you're an idiot, don't be so disrespectful. No one deserves to die.

I do not know the NYC bike paths, and by NO MEANS playing devil's advocate. I reasd these stories of people getting away with murder...and wonder why riding on a bike path in a car is ok... never mind doing so drunk!! Or.. I was downloading a ringtone drove into the brwakdown lane, and mowed down a cyclist... I can not fathom how anyone looks at these and says... 1000 dollars will teach you a lesson... I TRUELY wish karma takes its revenge since the American "Justice" system won't.

Exactly not to mention that this has to be the only bike path in NYC that is actually separate from the street. The majority of the path has a physical barrier between in and the highway and there are only a few sections where cars can cross through. But this mother****er drove DOWN THE BIKE PATH not only that but so fast as to brutally this guy. This is ****ed up to bad. I hope he gets put away for a long time.

Just got this email from the Times Up! email list.. I'll post more details if/when I get them. Spread the word!

Hi all,

We're going to set the memorial ride for Saturday afternoon. We'd
like to meet at Washington Square Park at 1pm, then head to the site
at 1:30 or so. We've been making art for the site all day today and
have some really nice work.

After the ride we want to have a memorial service somewhere nearby so
that people can talk, have a slideshow, etc. We'd like to aim for a
3pm or 4pm event at Bluestockings or St. Marks or somewhere like that.
People were also interested in having an evening dance party, since a
good party is pretty clearly what Eric would have wanted!

I'll let you know more as I know more. Thanks guys!

Ryan
