Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Is this possible?

Ok guys. Would it be possible to put a SS freewheel on the back , and still use 3 chainrings up front? I was thinking I would take off the middle pulley of the der, and convert it to a singleator type of thing.

This is for the huffy, and I just want to do it b/c i think it would be neat. I want to put some v-brakes on, and my shifter pods are integrated into the brake levers. I was thinking I would go derailler-less, and I would just use my hand or foot to shift the front. I have been doing a lot of urban stuff, and my seat is usually all the way down, so I basically I have two modes: small ring in front, and big cog in back for the goofball stuff i do when actually urbaning, and middle ring and big cog in back for the ride over. so really I don't need a real derailler. the question that remains is if it can be done.

ok...I'm not going to do that. How about this.

My rear derailler has just been trashed. ( pulley went flying into oblivion, and it is wrapped around freewheel at this time. So, i was thinking single speed again. I will take off the front derailler, the granny gear, and the rear mech. I might even leave the front chainings intact. I'll then shorten the chain, and lay the chain on the cog of my choice. Later, I will buy a freewheel.

I have a seven speed freewheel hub on there right now, can I put a single on? Would there be a gap between the dropout and the frewheel? 7 cogs is definitly wider then 1.

Yeah there will be a big ol gap where the spacer is on the axle so the chainline is going to be pretty ****ty, but it might work? Maybe.
