Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Anyone know where to find

Chain tensioners that fit vertical drop outs? I've looked everwhere, ebay, craigslist, uinversal cycles, nashbar... no one has them. I know they exist though because i saw a set on a conversion. This was befre i needed them so i didnt ask where to find a set.
Thanks

i've never used one, but hearsay votes for the surly singleator. you can't use it if you're building a fixed gear though.

edit: nevermind. we're not talking about the same thing.

edit #2: what the hell are you talking about? chain tensioners push the wheel. with a vertical dropout there's nowhere for it to go.

Maybe you mean horizontal dropouts, i.e. not track ends? If so, a Surly Tugnutt works beautifully on my conversion, particularly in conjunction with the little holes in my 1010 dropouts. I bet just about any tensioner will work if you are prepared to mod it and./ or your dropouts slightly.

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I have a similar problem. There is enough of a gap tolerance in my vertical drops to allow the wheel to shift on the drive side. This was aggrivated by a poorly installed axle by the local shop (just a little too much axle sticking out on the QR so the wheel would tighten but not quite enough to keep it locked in place). Worked fine when geared, but now on SS/Fix the offroad mashfest pulls the wheel forward and detensions the chain.

Had some SKS tensioners from a track frame, but the wouldn't workout. Not sure if there is anything else out there that would do the trick.

You running QR on that setup? Having proper tracknuts/bolt on axle has made a huge difference in grip for me, anyway.

BMX "star" chain tensioners..just file off the back part.

PS. QRs are fine on fixed gear bikes.
