so i know there was a thread similar to this months ago, but i can't find it (if someone has it, feel free to link it in here), but i just got my stuff insured and i'm wondering how to go about insuring my bikes... all 3 are built frame-up, so it's not like i can list "bianchi pista: $550" what's the best way to go about listing it? list it as separate items? (components) or just total up the worth of the parts? other than photographing them as proof, i'm not really sure what to do. thanks!

I might be mistaken, usually I am. But homeowner's / rental insurance covers bikes to a certain degree. Recepits for all the parts are probably the best way of proving value / ownership.

Yep, homeowner's and renter's cover your bike to a certain amount depending on your policy. You can also purchase separate riders to have a extra coverage for certain expensive things, electronics, art, camera equiptment, bikes, etc.

i checked my policy and there's no limit for bikes, i just want to make sure i don't get screwed, i'm not sure how they would write up a custom built bike.

Take photos, keep receipts, and put them with your list/pics of other valuables, photocopies of your passport, driver's license, birth certificate, health/life insurance policy and $1000 cash in a fireproof safe, or at a close by friend or relative's house. When the time comes (it will) you're gonna be happy to have all of that at hand.

Go either to your local lbs and engrave it, or got to police and engrave it...thats how it works in Sweden.

Call me paranoid, but living in SF for 12 years and knowing "The Big One" may be coming any time + Katrina (You think the feds don't care about N.O., what do you think they think about S.F.?) Living in Oakland for 6 years assured me that eventually someone was going to burglarize my house, and or it was going to burn to the ground-- hell's yes I keep all of my important documents secure, plus some cash. Don't even ask about my drinking water and ammunition. It'll just creep you out.

As far as my bikes go, they, like anything else I have of value, are listed on my homeowner's policy, registered here (https://www.nationalbikeregistry.com/because/index.html Not so much because I think it would help with a theft recovery, but because it might help establish that it belonged to me when fighting with the insurance co.) Most cities offer a bicycle license for free as well. Do it. Go down to the firehouse, police station or wherever and register your steed. Renter's insurance is a great idea. I never had it when I rented, and was bummed when I got robbed. I think it's cheap, and if you value your track bike, your Technics decks, your laptop (with all of your music that you have hard copies of stashed somewhere right? Right?) etc., you should probably check it out.

Alright, since this is now an earthquake thread...
USGS says that there is a 62 percent chance of a 6.7 or greater quake happening in the Bay Area sometime in the next 30 years.
Loma Prieta was a 7.1 and was centered in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
It's predicted that the next one will be somewhere between San Jose and Santa Rosa, on either side of the Bay.
If San Francisco experienced an earthquake of similar magnitude centered within a 15 mile radius, massive damage to the urban centers would likely result. This includes failures of the major bridge spans (the newest of which, the San Mateo-Hayward bridge, was constructed in 1967. The others are much older), breaching of the Transbay tube, and the collapse of hundreds, if not thousands of structures (unreinforced masonry, anyone?).
Let's not for get the broken water and gas mains and lots and lots of pretty fire...
I'm sure that state and local government will be there to supply transportation, medical care, food and water, and that the National Guard will be called upon to quell civil unrest. Just like down in Louisiana.

So, yes, you should insure your bike.

But, really, don't compare S.F. to New Orleans... or, California to Louisiana. California is 10th on the list of COUNTRIES' economies. Though if a similar "reaction" by the Government was to happen, I wouldn't mind being part of the Bear Flag Revolt Redux.

I know the comparison isn't really all that valid, but the situation on the Gulf coast was an eye-opener for me. I've always been pretty prepared for the worst (growing up in the middle of nowhere will do that to you), but it's now been proven that we're quite possibly on our own in the face of any kind of major disaster, either natural or man made.

I have a $1,500 track bike with recipt, but as far as modification recipts, I have nothing. If I took some photos and got my local bike shop to appraise it's value, would that mean anything if I got hit by a car and it was their fault?

pat - getting your bike appraised by a shop is a great idea. ive had friends who have taken that route in the past.
