Fixed Gear Unique...
I noticed something today... that most people that choose to ride FG are people who are "different". I see alot of insinuations of band-wagon-jumping, but the truth is, there is someting unique, crazy, weird, crazy, and weird too... and just plain-ole different.
The whole vegetarian thread speaks volumes of this. Folks here are on the right "track"... no pun intended.
There are alot of common factors. Is this like a club... like?
Secret society?
Or are we just plain old bunch o' looney's?
What do you say?

I think the common thread is that we like to ride, fixed or otherwise. Plus, we're hipsters and we covet the speed holes in other's frames.
But seriously, I think the real common thread is that we like bicycles. I don't see myself as all that "different" from other folks around me. Just because I happen to have a fixie along with my other bikes doesn't make me stand out.

Yeah, generally speaking I'm a "regular guy" who likes bikes. I'm not a "hipster", I'm not vegan, and I'm never seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women.
There is something of a sub-bike-cult when it comes to fixies, though. I know that I love mine, and I started riding because I'm a dude who loves bikes and this was a different type of bike to try. But whoo boy do my other bike-riding friends look at me all askance when I start talking fixed.

Hell, I'm a middle aged suburban white guy. No one would ever take me for a hipster or messenger wannabe.
People have been riding fixed since bikes were invented for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with style, age, or group identity.
But I do like cappucino and Oriental women...

I guess I do fit that fixed gear stereotype. I am a vegetarian, 22, white, from an upper-middle class background, in graduate school, the proud owner of an iPod with 5000 songs on it, and an occasional patron of an Italian coffee shop where I drink espresso, albeit mostly with Russian women.
Dammit...I'm not a hipster, I promise. SingleSpeeDemon can vouch for my nerdiness.

Nope, doesn't have the same ring.

Clearly we need to swap cultural references.
So I'll google that song, you go watch the Big Lebowski.

We'd better all be unique, I don't care what you ride. If I see me anywhere but a mirror I'll cut the sum*****

Sam Houston said it "unique!" My fixie, speaking as a bike junkie, feels so different from any other of my bikes. Regardless of coffee stength, ensemble statement, meat load, vegie high, companion's ethinicity, or personal profile. Me and my fixie go up, down, over, around and under. It's just that..
IT FEELS SO REAL
