Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

before everyone gets way too critical of "he is in the wrong ring" or "so-and-so rode in the distance shots," this is by far one of my favorite movies AND is the one reason I became interested in cycling.

thanks for posting this! it is nice to see this again

Is it just me, or does the lead character from this movie look suspiciously like Beck?

this is going to turn into a thread criticizing the whole "wrong ring" issue.
but let me tell you, anyone who can't spin the little ring that fast is a damn sissy!

I'd say yes if you got monster legs, but not with ordinary gearing. 60mph is not that much more than the 45mph that trackies do in sprint. A truck just pulls you with itself.

Totally possible in very short bursts, but not cruising along for nearly 100 miles...

Yes, this is possible. I used to do motorpace training on a regular basis. I would maintain speeds of 60- 65 mph for several miles using 52/12 gearing.

She offered to, but I instinctively said: "Nah, don't worry 'bout it..."

I remember she also lost my copy of Rushmore...

Just remembered my favorite part — to Fellini: "Are you hongry?" lol!

yeah I liked the movie too. I was just a little kid when I saw that movie first, and I never forgot that scene.

Now for my Negative Nancy comments. He put like 3 turns on that spoke nipple!

Oh and I never noticed it before, but they put a little ramp where he rode off the curb after kissing the mailman. If they have so much respect for front wheels, why did they let him tweak the hell outa that spoke?

Eddy Van Guyse was one of the Team Cinzano riders?! That looks like his signature. He calls a lot of big races across the country now.
