skidding vs skipping (order learned)
i've been trying to skip all night and managed to figure out how to skid in the process, by accidentally locking up my rear knee. i can't hold it but the tires to begin skidding and i can feel them rotate backwards a bit before my knee unlocks.
sooo is it just me or are VERY short skids way easier than skipping?
also have observed that it is somewhat difficult to maintain handlebar control, but i think it's because i'm standing up and as i put pressure on my left foot i twist my body to the left, causing the bars to turn slightly

I learned how to skid way sooner than skip. Skipping came with a brief switchover to clipless, and was finetuned with learning how to skid with my weak leg back and getting the balance more in order.
Skipping when you can lock at each rotation is a good way to speedcheck. Both have different learning curves, in my opinion, but each has their own application which combined makes worry over stopping a thing of the past.

Don't lock up your knees - skipping OR skidding. I don't know if we're just using different terminology, but if that trailing leg isn't bent a little, you're gonna hurt.

Second scene on the big hill. The guy in the black hoodie is skipping. Very subtle. Watch his legs pause while he's riding.
As for learning. I learned how to skip before skid.
Skidding just wrecks tires. It is fun however.
I also do what I call "stabbing" which is pretty much a heavy exagerated skip,
Really good for stopping at med-low speeds at traffic lights.
Oh yeah.. Don't even bother skidding, skipping, or stabbing if you don't have a decent hub/rim.
