I just bought this (see picture) brand new. It arrived with about a half inch chip on one of the rear dropouts but I think I shouldn't have any issues touching it up. I wish it was chrome, but due to envrionmental laws in Europe, they no longer do chrome plating. I don't understand why the paint jobs on Merckx's are always so thin and fragile.

Anyway, I'm thinking of setting it up as a fixed gear bike. What do you guys think? Is it too nice/expensive for a fixie?

I would never turn such a fine road frame into a conversion. Build it up with period parts or make it a sleeper with modern ones. The nice thing about Merckx's is that Shimano or Campy will be appropraite and not totally wrong.

I would say yes but, I have seen someone build up a Merckx Corsa 7-Eleven Limited as a fixie and I thought it was looked great.

Nice frame. If that paint chip bugs you, just cover the whole bike in hockey tape.

things you need to ask yourself:

do you own another FG?

If so, will you ride that one if you fix the Merckx?

Do you really have the time, cash, and desire to hunt down a good era-appropriate group? Do you care?

Do you own a fixed rear wheel? If not, how much are you going to spend to get one?

I'd say fix it and ride it. You'll eventually get a track frame, transfer parts, and shrink that Merckx down, and sell it to me cheap.

Do exactly what you want with that frame. You bought it up so you decide if you want new 10 speed, old ****ty road group or fixie.

Well, I never thought about putting 'era' parts on it. I already own an mx leader from the mid 90's with original parts. The way I see it is that the bike was built in 2006, so it should have 2006 parts on it. After all, it has a threadless steerer tube. I think it would look cool with a chorus gruppo, but was started to think about a fixie.

The period will be 1988 to 1990. Grouppo is Shimano Dura Ace 8 speed - early STI.

Good choice. The 06 Chorus is nice, especially if you are a fan of the square taper BB.

Thanks. Didn't mean to come off in a mean way. The frame came with a certificate and a nice picture of hampsten using the shimano gear. It actually says the frame was used between 89 and 90.
