Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

bumblebees are the worst. You can hear them coming towards your face and when they give a surprisingly strong impact. No stings yet.

Bumblebees and wasps smashing into your glasses are a bit of a shock too. Definitely ate a few flies and mosquitoes, and ate and inhaled many many gnats.

In the spring and summer, black flies in the eyes are the worst nuissance ever. As far as real concerns, once I was hit in the lip by a hornet as I came down a LONG downhill. It stung me and I couldn't manage to swipe it out for five seconds. I had a fat lip but I'm pretty sure the hornet got the worst of it. Still shocked the hell out of me.

there's a section of road I often ride where at certain times of the year I run into a swarm of gnats. All you can do at that point is keep riding, breathe through your nose, keep your head down and swallow as few as possible. But after I get back, I usually have to wipe a bunch of them off my sweaty forehead and everyone that stuck to my head through the helmet vents....

Here in B-More city we had the 17-year cicadas in 2005, if my memory serves. I didn't bike quite as much back then, but those things are the size of golfballs, and dumber than a barge of bricks. The results, and the smell, were both rather predictable.
