Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This has nothing to do with bikes, but I figured it's the best place to ask.

I volunteered to assemble the music for our elementary school's talent show. That means that scores of kids (aged 5-12) will be coming to me with cds containing various forms of music, ranging from Indian dance, hip-hop, and Broadway show tunes to kareoke versions of Hillary Duff and Cheetah Girls songs.

I need a way to quickly import one song from a cd and quickly tag it with the name of the kid or the title of the act (not necessarily the song title) so that when the show happens, a person can sit there with my laptop and iTunes and play the music for each act.

When I tried it with iTunes, it wanted to import the whole cd. Then I had to go back and find it in the computer in order to re-name it. Time is an issue here, since I will be having to do this and teach my normal first graders at the same time.

I just figured that the people on the SSFG forum know more about importing music onto computers than most elementary school teachers do.

In iTunes you can import a single song by dragging it into a playlist.

Make a playlist for this project, then drag the songs you want from the cds to that playlist. then edit the ID3 tag to indicate the name of the student who brought it.

When you import to iTunes there are little check boxes to the left of each song. If a song is checked, it will be imported, otherwise not. Alternatively, you can select each track, and then import them by going to Advanced > Convert selection to MP3.

You can get the track names by going to Advanced > Get CD Track Names.

Also, look in you "recently added" folder in Itunes. They should be there, now go forth and build a playlist.

screw iTunes

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/CDDA_Ripper_XP.htm

free open source and very easy to use CD ripper, all the options you need if you want 'em, decent default settings if you don't.

Apple>i on the song title and you can change all the tags on the song to whatever you want.

Make sure the songs they bring in don't have "special" words. I DJ'ed a 6th grade dance when I was teaching, and by mistake let a few slip through.

Any program that can rip to MP3 works for me. Personally, Itunes handles my 80 gb music folder well, so I use it.

Your best bet is to hum the instrumental pieces you require, for the songs with vocals you'll need a back-up hummer while you render the lyrics in a sweet sweet falsetto. Elementary kids hate anyone who can't keep it real.

Yes, it is far easier to download, install, and learn another program, than to just click a button or two in the one you have!

I just found out my job's been changed. Now they want me to videotape the damn thing. Then make a DVD of the show. I've never owned a video recorder and I'm not real sure how they work. In the past, I've just done a database of the acts, and then supervised the green room the night of the show. I know Excel and how to keep stage moms happy.

In case you haven't notice, I'm not doing this on an entirely voluntary basis.
