gears
could geard bikes be the new fixies? iv been seeing some conversions that just shouldnt be lately. why are people taking great road bikes and converting them? i have the beast geared bike in the world a 76 paramount. a total wolf in sheeps clothing in my oppinion, and the best part is noone will ever steal it.(because at a glance it looks like a heap of ****) so am i the only one that isnt affraid to rock gears or what? why do i see these awsome pregutes(spelling ?) and bianchis being striped of there character to rock some fly by night fad?

You don't see too many Paramounts and Super Corsas that have been stripped into conversions. Most of what I see are lower level, gas pipe beaters that were cheap to begin with. But maybe you are right. Soon all the hipsters will be rockin' multiple gears and wearing flannel. History does tend to repeat itself. I have hopes for a 3 speed revival.

I am actually a huge fan of gears. I love riding fixed gears, but when I want a 40 mile ride in the hills and I want to go fast I get out my road bike.

I don't like conversions that are set up to look like track bikes. I guess I understand why people don't like the faddish aspects of conversions but still I don't agree that converting a nice road frame is morally wrong or anything like that. I commute and do long road rides on a nice road conversion. The idea that only bull**** sears frames should be converted is a bfssfg meme that rubs me the wrong way.

Not everybody you see riding a fixed gear, only has a fixed gear. My rain bike is a fixed, but I also have a geared roadie, 3 speeds, mountian, etc. My fixed gear is a old gas pipe frame, that would just not be right for anything else.

I have a singlespeed s***house conversion, a mtb fixie conversion (also very cheap), a road race bike and an upcoming mtb race bike (thanks to my sponsor) which both have gears. Fixie is fun, but when it comes to competition, gears are a must.
Now, if someone buys a supercorsa or colnago or whatever JUST to be a fixie, they are idiots. If they have one lying around getting no use and they don't want to put it on ebay, then they have every right to make it into a fixie if it means it will be ridden. Thats what the bike was made to do, the builder probably never thought it would be a collectors item, so by putting gears on it and making it purely a showpiece they are doing the wrong things. Ride the bloody bikes, as fixies or not.

i have a 79 Schwinn Super le Tour II and i really love it. i would never have done a thing to it but fact of the matter is that its just old. it was giving me so many mechanical problems that one day i just decided to get rid of all that old complicated **** and convert it to a SS/FG commuter. easier that way for nyc everyday use. in the future though, i picture myself taking excursions to the pyrenees mountains with a kick-ass road bike. triple crankset, the works.
