I'm thinking of getting a fix gear for training. My LBS has a Fuji track that was $500 and marked down to $375 and the owner was in a big hurry to talk about it and reduce the price more if I get it out of the shop. I know it has been there a long time. I think it is a 2002 (black and gold). Is this a nice ride or has it been sitting for a reason.

You, are of course, aware of the similarities between the Fuji Track and The Windsor Teh Hour? If you can't get the LBS to mark down, the Windsors are all over ebay and bikesdirect.com. Try and get the LBS to mark down to $325.

Search this forum for BD, Windsor Hour, Fuji Track, and you will find plenty of reviews. If you start swapping parts like the cog, tires, bars, stem, etc, the total cost might pass the $450 mark, at which point it might be worthwhile to go for something better. In my opinion, the thin fork and thin tubing on the Fujis/Windsor frames looks kind of wimpy. It's cromoly, so I'm not saying it can't take a beating, but it just looks too skinny.

If you need something to ride _now_, the Fuji is perfect. But if you've got the motivation to build a bike, consider converting a '70s-'80s touring frame to fixed. It's not hard to score an old 10 or 12-speed complete bike for $100. Add a rear wheel with a track hub, cog and lockring for $100, remove the shifters and other extra bits and you've got yourself a fixie that probably looks and feels better than the Fuji/Windsor.

does it fit? If it doesn't fit reasonably well, it doesn't matter if it was built by Sante Pogliaghi and molested by a catholic priest. Unless you want to flip it, but you won't do anything with that one except recoup.

It fits me well, its a 54 I think. The black and gold is real nice! I was thinking of the make my own thing with an old frame, but this looks a lot simpler and not any more expensive.

Then go for it I'm not pushing you into building a conversion if you don't want to. I suppose it doesn't matter what you start with anyway since once the fixie bug bites you will start collecting bikes like pokemon.

I will probably still make one even if I get the Fuji, I love to tinker with sh*%. So far this winter my OCR3 went from 8 speed Sora to 9 speed 105 and I did a major service on my MTB/comfort. Its only February, I still have until April or May for the weather to brake.

Do a search about the rear hub. That 2002 will have the garbage Quandro hub or whatever that apparently strips if it you even look at it funny.
So, you might want to factor in the cost of possibly having to replace that hub too.

I would say build up your own bike because that's more fun and it's more individualized as opposed to cookie-cutter off the shelf type ****, but that's not a bad deal. Go for it.

Go for it Larry. Building your own can be step 2 if you like but in the meantime you need a fg bike to ride.

Ya, I have to work tomorrow, but on my way home on Tuesday I'm going to stop and get down to brass tacks on the price. I do all of my business at that shop and will do O.K. If I like fixed bikes I will make a better one in the future. I hope I can ride this thing!!!

I called them from the station today, I'm going to get it in the morning. I'll let you know how I do on price. I will put a brake on it for the road. I will not need it tomorrow. Winter storm warning!

I have to say its been cool reading about your excitement and journey to get this bike. Plus, everyone who posted responses were helpful and positive which is great. When you get to the point where you can ride the bike in traffic with skill, when it's an extension of your body and skidding/skipping is purely instinctual, it's another f***in world. Congratulations on your purchase and I wish you miles and miles of fun.
