Better fixed gear candidate?
I am going to put a fixed hub wheel on one of these bikes. Would one be better than the other or is it really just personal preference?

The fork on the Peugeot looks off, might be the angle.

That Pug still looks like it has a bent fork which would of course make me choose the Raleigh.

I really don't think the fork is bent. I have inspected it and looked at many web pictures of other UO-8's. Plus I have been riding it for months. It is a strong steel fork. They don't make em like they used to!

I love that Pug, but yeah the fork looks effed. If the fork is solid then convert that guy. Sexy bike.
Are you riding it single speed right now?

UO8's are wonderful bikes and are pretty common candidates for conversions here since they are rather abundant and inexpensive.
For not a lot of money you can build up a reasonably light bike with a higher bb clearance that rides really well.
My Pug weighs 22 pounds and a few ouinces with a leather saddle and vintage steel rack... it does not ride quite as nicely as a UO8 due to it being a P6 which is a far stiffer bike and because it uses a stiffer fork with less trail.

I am just learning about bikes but just from "looks" I really like the Pug. I have not ridden the raleigh so I can't compare as far as ride quality. I believe the Pug is a '75. I like the idea of riding an old bike like that. I don't know why. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with not having any money anyway!

My Pug has 11.5 inches of clearance at the bb with 700:25 tyres so even with 170mm cranks the risk of pedal strike is nearly nonexistant.
I figure if I strike a pedal I'm already screwed.
Other road bikes don't have nearly as much bb clearance and less clearance increases the risk of pedal strikes when you are cornering.

I was looking at the Raleigh earlier and some of the engineering seems a little cheesy. I will take pics of examples later.
