Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I should have come here first...

If you had two geared bikes [or enough parts to build two] and wanted to sell them both to get an IRO Rob Roy, would you build one up with newer parts and one with older stuff, or build them both up with older parts and sell off the newer parts separately?

unless some of your parts are something special,in most cases you'll get more for a complete bike than parting it out.

Bike #1:
  • 1995 Specialized M2 Pro road [56 cm]
  • New carbon fork + threadless HS
  • Full Ultegra 8spd [brifters], new rear der
  • Looks pretty good, not crashed, not raced, but definitely ridden; currently a SS with flat bar

Bike #2:
  • 1986 Bianchi Axis cyclocross [54 cm]
  • Original frame/fork/HS/BB/triple crank/Suntour ders/cantis
  • Barely used when I got it [collecting dust in somebody's garage], converted to 8spd with flat bar and thumbshifters, converted again to SS, no crashing or racing
  • Some wear and tear from commuting, currently resting in the corner sans wheels

Extra parts lying around:
  • Dura-Ace 9spd hubs laced to Campy Moscow rims - barely used
  • Ultegra 9spd shifters from my wife's bike, in very good shape
  • Spare XT rear der. [new]
  • Spare 9spd Ultegra rear wheel
  • Suntour XC-Pro 8spd thumbshifters in decent shape
  • An extra flat bar
  • Asst. stems
  • ENO flip/flop rear hub laced to Velocity rim
  • Ultegra 8 spd cassette 12-23 [?]
  • XT 8 spd cassette 12-32 [12-34?]

keep a geared bike man. rob roy's arent that expensive. full ultegra is nice. and you could convert 8spd to 9spd just by changing the brifters and rear wheel (rd will work with 9spd).

Since the Rob Roy is ostensibly a cyclocross bike, I think
it would make the most sense to sell the Bianchi and keep
the Specialized for road use. You know, different bikes for
different applications.

ah yes, i was just referring to the 9spd wheel that he had a laying around

i didn't notice, however, that he had a soloist laying around, so it seems like the geared bike is taken care of

they both look like nice bikes, i think you could get a decent price for them the way they're built now. if you go ebay, i'd leave on the stuff that's shiny. for craigslist, i'd offer to customize the bike using the spare parts, adjusting the price as necessary.

cheers, i know you've had your eye on the rob roy for awhile. best of luck.

In my experience, this is the opposite of true. Admittedly I deal mostly with vintage bikes, but I've only ever had 1 bike where I had any hope of getting as much for the complete bike as for the parts. Up against that, I recently parted out a bike I got for $100, and got around $500 for the parts.

Study the market on eBay using Advanced Search to let you look at the results of completed auctions to determine what will get you a better result.

Thanks people! You are way more helpful than the road forum. I'll go through craigslist and a couple of other local classified lists. Yah, the Cervelo and the Trek definitely take care of my gearie needs, but I want the Rob Roy for doing everything else.
