Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

hipsters in london?

Hey, whose here from London? It's starting to look like I might get relocated to London in the next 4-6mo. Anyone have any advice as to which neighborhoods to look at? For boston/london cats, Somerville is my kind of place.

All the cool cats live in Hackney, Shoreditch (expensive 250 gbp p/w rent on a one bed flat min), brick lane, White Chaple, or Finsbury park aint to bad. Mill Hill and Stoke Newington, are good palces. Not the nicest of area but not as bad as eveyone says either. Basically north east and east, inner zone 2 areas. I live South east which is as uncool as you can get, but cheapest. West and South West tend to be quite posh and expensive, more trendy in the sence of people with lotts of money. North is also expesive and trendy, Islington is trendy, I am a liberal, arty, I only eat organic, I care about the enviroment, I drive a big 4X4 because of sking trips in France.

edit: If your a hipster you would love old street. My self I tend to do alot of my drinking in the street.

Yeah this guys got it right. The richest parts are North and West, poorest South and East. Hackney/Shoreditch is east and has been bombarded with young professionals because of cheap rent and avaliable property (i don't know if i'd call them hipsters, that word isn't prevalent round these parts...) It's only a matter of time before new generations are priced out of the market, like what happened with Notting Hill and Camden Town. Central London is also very expensive, not many can afford to live there.

2nd the whole Hoxton/Shoreditch/White Chappel/Brick Lane suggestion (all very georgraphically very close, at the intersection of the london borroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets).

Bits of Tower Hamlets and Hackney are still affordable. Some nice concentrations of shops/people around Newington Green, London Fields and Brick Lane areas but prices just keep going up. If you like it a little edgier then Hackney Central and Dalston have lots to offer.

Main reason Hackney's cheap is that theres no tube in the borrough. But there will be soon (although its just an extension of the joke that is the East London Line). But it has pretty good Rail and excellent bus connections, as well as being a short 15 min ride away from central London.

East and North East London's where it's at. Hackney (London Fields and Broadway Market), Dalston (Kingsland Road) Shoreditch (Old Street and surrounding streets), Spitalfields (around Brick Lane), Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Bow. It's also worth taking a look at Stoke Newington (around Church Street) and Clerkenwell (I always see tons of messengers round here). If you're interested in South London, Brixton's awash with 'hipsters' too. Nice and edgy (bring a good bike lock).

The 'Cool' places are the 'poor' places and they are cheap cause they have the highest crime rates.
(Sad but true)

However east london is really good fun and a great mix of cultures. The only thing I'd say about Stoke Newington is the transport is terrible but if you always ride thats not a problem.

Is it safe to lock my bike to the railing in front?
