Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? That scarf looks like it might get caught in the wheel or something!

Otherwise, those are some pretty ridiculous demands.

From the NYPOST comments:
As someone who needs to ride through this area to go to work everyday, I say the bike lanes are a godsend and I hope they aren't eliminated. From what I gather, Hasids want to insulate themselves from the outside world in a city of 8 million people. How is that possible? These bike lanes are a gift to the citizens of this city and many of us are taking advantage of it. Without them, my ride from Queens to Downtown Brooklyn would be far more dangerous. As far as traffic laws, in S. Williamsburg I see more double parking and driving in the bike lane than anywhere else.

yeah i'm a dude and i still get nasty looks occasionally when riding through that area. it's tough, because i'm jewish also but wayyy less conservative. i've never lived in a place with so many other jews before, which is nice, but having them hate on me for not being jewish enough is not.

So the city needs to change due to certain people's lack of will? Geez...

Hasids are forbidden from looking at members of the opposite sex who aren't fully dressed, said local activist Isaac Abraham.

That's insane. These people need to get over themselves, and join the rest of us in modernity.

ugh.
i don't have anything against jewish people in general..... but every run-in i've had with hasids has been negative, the last one resulting in a few days in bookings. plus, the amount of awful things i've read/heard about those guys is more than plentiful.

and are they really trying to say that if their neighborhood "has to" be part of the greenway, that they shouldn't have to have bike lanes because they cause "traffic congestion and parking problems". really? how many people are riding through your neighborhood at any given time? idiots.

**** them.

"Leaders of South Wil liamsburg's Hasidic community said yesterday that bike lanes that bring scantily clad cyclists - especially sexy women - peddling through their neighborhood are definitely not kosher."

i don't understand why any group, especially a jewish one, would so actively want to further ghettoize themselves. what goes on in their houses and places of worship is their decision, but the streets belong to the whole public.

Because that's the only way such a bat-**** strict religion can survive in the modern world. If their kids didn't have to spend all of their formative years neck deep in this stuff, with the rest of the world effectively filtered out, I doubt if 10% of them would still be hasids in adulthood.

i agree, and i find it even more ironic that they're trying to do this in the heart of New York City and not the hinterlands of Pennsylvania or Utah.

all that said, Rosh Hashana is coming up and i really don't need to be hatin' on my fellow Heebs.

i know, and i agree. thus, i think the solution here is that more scantily-clad cyclists should stop and have a corned beef sammich and bowl of matzoh ball soup next time they roll through South Williamsburgh. that was everyone wins.

Ha. Not at all. They are really into sex (within marriage only) and encourage couples to have lots of it, even if they are infertile/post menopausal/already pregnant/whatever.
