Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Where did you get these photos? Someone should contact that fella with the bandana before he kills himself or someone else out on the roads.

There are quite a few very dangerous bikes posted here recently. Funny to an extent.

damn that thing is ugly...hopefully this doesn't piss too many people off but, jesus christ, enough with the track bikes, fixed gear and no brakes and blah blah blah...it's so trendy and ridiculous it makes me want to puke sometimes. I mean, it's ok to have one and all but the no brake thing is just so ****ing stupid. Ok, you're cool cause you have no brakes on your bike If you can give me another reason as to why you did that then fine, and don't say to make your bike as light as possible...c'mon.

clean lines, tricks, because you don't ride fast enough to need a brake.

What is the point of this? Is this the thing where you run 2 different sized freewheels on each side of the hub so you pedal in one ratio and backpedal/resistance in a different ratio?

I don't think that can work:
When driving forward, the non-driveside freewheel would only freewheel if the non-driveside chain was moving slower than the wheel, so the drive side must be the higher ratio. When resisting, the opposite situation obtains, and the non-drive side must be the higher ratio. So standard freewheels on both sides should just be a sloppy fixed gear if the ratios are equal, and the drivetrain won't turn at all if they are different.

I've built several (retro-direct) bikes, with two freewheels on the same side and a funky chain route that lets you propel the bike forward at different ratios by pedaling forward or backward, so I wonder if that is what you are thinking of?

In any case, the pictured bike is not a retro-direct, and I can't come up with any possible functional justification for the extra chain. That's not my thing, but I'm hardly in a position to criticize someone else for building weird drive trains for inexplicable reasons. If there is a functional justification, or I'm somehow wrong about the two-freewheels idea, I'd genuinely love to hear about it.
