Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Make sexy time at school of PhD for Amero-politics

I don't know why I am posting this here, but I just thought you'd all like to know that after months of self-reflection and an epiphany on my commute home from work this week (see this is bike related) I've decided to quit the rat race and return to grad school to get a phd. Somehow riding Serenity gives me peace of mind and lets me see what is right in front of my face.

that is all.

hey man, good luck. i'd much rather have knowledge than wealth. there's something fulfilling about knowledge and the continual quest for more of it.
best of luck to you, but be sure to keep biking!

Not that i am by any means "wealthy"--but being able to afford the bike parts I want and drink guiness instead of PBR ins't worth showing up to a dead end job that you absolutely hate.

yes - you should stave off your personal desire to gain a deeper level of exploration into a subject field that fascinates you because someone on BikeForums waved the "class separatist" finger in your face! Take that, freedom of choice! Your individual goals should only apply if others approve them.

you don't need grad school to hide.

all you need is a basement. a parent's basement if conditions allow.

As long as you can get funding (fellowships, teaching assistantships, whatever) I think you can't go wrong with grad school. At the very least you get to become an expert in something you really like and meet some of the real cutting edge brilliant people in that field. Afterwards even if you decide academia isnt your bag you will still be much wiser and no poorer.

Since I'm waiting on the last few hopes of an acceptance to some MFA program, I definitely support the grad school decision. As long as you can get funding.

....but, won't you have at least a few months to think about the decision? I know that there aren't really any creative writing programs that are accepting applications anymore (mostly until about a year from now). Maybe other disciplines work differently?

Do it, but for god's sake don't get 'PhD disease'.

About 2/3 of the PhDs I know are the most smug, arrogant ****** I've ever met, all because they can wave around that piece of paper. They maintain this even in the face of overwhelming evidence of their ******baggery or incompetence.

Have fun in the ivory tower, but don't forget where you came from.

Oh yeah, good luck!
