this may sound stupid but im considering buying the bike below. im going to convert it into a fixie and will be removing the watter bottle holders and gear switches near the head. does anyone have any clue how to fill those holes, if that;s even possible?

well the "gear switches" fit on a post not a hole.

Removing or filling the bottle cage bosses is stupid. Someday you may want to go on a ride longer then 10 miles and they'll come in handy.

WOW. I would ride the hell out of that thing. The tires and paint... I'm speechless!

That said, what you're talking about doing is for aesthetics sake alone and not worth the effort. For the bottle cages, just leave the bolts in. For the down-tube bosses, anything but a hack-saw is fine.

If you really want to "fill" the holes, you could solder them shut, I suppose. But what's the point?

Why on earth would you want to remove the bottle
holders? It's not a track bike and it never will be,
no matter how much money and how many NJS
parts you put on it. Keep the water bottle cages
and don't dehydate during the summer.

i wouldn't convert that to fixed- it looks like a nice old road bike, with 105 components..i'd ride it as is.


if you don't want to see the water bottle cage brazeons, just unbolt the cage, and crew the bolts in. voila.
shifter bosses are a little harder..there are a few options..i'll let others elucidate.

edit: i wouldn't repaint either..that's a rad paintjob that looks to be in pretty good shape for 20 or so years of age..

I don't know for sure, but I think the component set is
actually Suntour GPX, which is as good as 105, IMO.

Since you are(thankfully) not repainting you want to go to your lbs and get cable stops to protect your from the shifter braze ons.

There are much better ways to spend $500 on a fixed gear bicycle than what you are proposing to do to that thing. It's not a spectacular bike to begin with, it seems overpriced for what it is, and the time effort and money you're going to sink into it far outweigh what you'll have as a finished project. I'm all for tinkering and making stuff and DIYing and converting unloved road bikes into bicycles that get used, but there comes a point where the return just doesn't merit the investment.

Yeah, 5 is pretty steep for that, especially if you plan to convert it. You could get something on CL for waaaay cheaper. Just look outside of the city. They get cheaper the farther you go out. I picked up a bridgestone rb for $150 last year.

$25 more bucks and you could get a Madison.

You're basing that solely on the paint, right? Last I checked, a late '80s/early '90s 105-equipped Japanese road bike made out of Tange 900 was not the sort of thing people went "holy hell, rad" over.

Yeah. Expensive. My friend had this exact bike, with same componentry. It rode quite well, but not worth $500. My LBS sold another one of these exact same bikes for I think $300 and it was in pretty much perfect condition. There's also another guy in town that rides one of these. It's weird I've been seeing so many of them lately. I feel like it shouldn't be that common of a bike.

i love the paint job and i'd keep it how it is too...

i found my fixed conversion for 75 bucks, that way i can keep my 100 dollar nishiki as a 10 speed
