Ishiwata 022 is a very very good steel. Seamless, double butted. Some custom builders actually felt it was every bit as good as Columbus or 531, but cost less, as it did not have the cachet. "022" refers to tubeset wall thickness, I believe; Ishiwata went down to 017 (very thin walled tubing, with a rider wieght limit of either 125 or 150 pounds, I fergets which) and up to 024. I have one bike built of 024 (Ross Aristocrat, don't laugh, it's a better bike than 95% of the bikes on this board) and one of 022 (1980 Trek 410) and like them both.

022 refers to kilograms for a standard 56cm frame (2.2 in this case.) Ishiwata steel is fine, fine stuff.

Sweet stuff

Ishawata 022 is 4130 cromoly. The 022 means 2.2 kilograms or 4.5 pounds. The double butting is .9 by.6 millimeters.
These are the same weights and dimensions as Reynolds 531 double butted. This tubes where used on premium bicycles mostly from Japan but can be found from other countries.
Ishawata was made in 019 to 025 all indicating frame weight. Later tubes where quad butted and were 022E.
I think the 022 MAY have a specified rider weight of 175 lbs. This is a guess.
Take pride in this frame it is quality stuff.

I have the 1977 Zeus catalogue/poster where they're offering their top frames built with either Reynolds 531 or Ishiwata 022 tubing. So I assume they were pretty equal in terms of quality and pricing.

You wouldn't be referring to the blue frame I have for sale made of such material would you?

Well... is that a Zeus? Lugs and fork ends are clearly diferrent from the ones I've seen. Could be an earlier model of course.

No namer. Unknown builder. Doesn't have zeus crown or ends.

There have been several threads about all of Ishiwata's tubing in C&V over the past couple of months. One thread has a complete chart with frameset gram weights, rider weight limits, etc. Good info to search for.

The Ishiwata factory was sold and is now called Kaisei with the same machines.
