Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

welcome to santa fe! if you're staying by the plaza you'll be right downtown with all the historic buildings and texan tourists to simultaneaously amaze and disgust you...it's not an especially bike-friendly town, but it's getting better, and you can't beat the weather.

-there's not a whole lot to do here besides eat out and you can generally find good vegetarian food almost everywhere (vegan food, on the other hand, is much more difficult to come by). most downtown restaurants are a little $$ but the food is usually good.

as for bike shops, there are only 3-4 in town....'Mellow Velo' is the 'fixie central/boutique-shop' in town but its prices are high, 'NM Bike n Sport' has some great mechanics but is more road/mtb oriented (despite this, i'd recommend it over the other shops). otherwise, a guy named Frankie Flats just opened a shop that i've yet to go to.

PM me if you want to go ride when you get here.

when I was there in January we ate at The Shed -- GREAT food at not scary-tourist prices, and our server rode fixed and mentioned alleycats and stuff. I fergit his name tho

BIKES: Mellow Vello is really the only shop in town with any kind of instock fixed gear selection. Their website is toeclip.com, and I'm sure it has an adress you can googlemaps up (they're right downtown, but I forget the street name). As other said Bike N' Sport is pretty much your typical mid-high mtb/road store, but they did have a 58cm gan well hanging up in a corner for a while (not my size though ). Chainbreaker is the bike co-op, and they're off 2nd street down by cerillos, not that this means anything but if you're interested pm me and I'll try and give better directions.

FOOD: Breakfast, santa fe baking co off Cordova, Tecolote off cerrillos, counter culture cafe off....sort of cerrillos, I don't remember.
pizza: upper crust pizza off old santa fe trail (I think that's the right street) green chilli / garlic pizza on whole wheat ftw.
Dinner/Lunch: Shed is pretty good taste of NM, so is Maria's (cordova/st. fancis) not sure about veggie options at either. Cleopatra's (in the design center) is good, cheap middle eastern/greek/etc with good veggie options
late night: nachos at the atomic, don gaspar and water street, I'm pretty sure, right down town. Pricey, but if you're splitting a plate it isn't a bad deal. (7/plate)

PM me if you want to catch a ride while you're in town. Have fun and eats lots of green chilli

Tia's for breakfast. San Francisco St. Cut the line for a counter spot. If Shed = slammed, sister restaurant is La Choza. Just off Cerrillos. And the OG, cheap vegetarian, is Baja Tacos. Just sayin.
