bombproof wheels - "deep" rim & cheap?

This is related to my recent thread about converting my old Raleigh to a fixie...

https://www.bikeforums.net/singlespeed-fixed-gear/283869-fixie-conversion-good-candidate-what-s-needed.html

Seems that the biggest thing I need is either a new rear wheel or hub. So, I've been checking out the options.

I like the way that deeper rims look, want something bombproof (weight isn't a big concern) and don't want to spend a bunch of money.

One of the posts in the linked thread steered me toward these...

https://shop.greatdealsonbikes.com/me...tegory_Code=TR

which seem to fit my criteria. However, knowing basically nothing about wheels...

Are these a good deal? Is there something better in the sub-$150 price range that I should consider instead?

Thanks for any help.

Steve

dude get the weinmann dp18 laced to formulas off the bay they are about 140 take em to a shop and get em tensioned unless you know a mechanic and ride

personally I hate deep cross section wheels they really aren't much stronger than any other box wheel I mean hey bmx bikes have super flat triple box rims and those kids abuse em

those formula/dp-18s are pretty tits for 120 bucks, if you go that route take them to you LBS and have them properly tentioned.

then stick a bunch of cd's in them

Seriously though I really do like mine. hit some huge cracks with mine and they are still good, plus they look good have good hubs and are cheap. that was the main selling point for me.

Thanks for the review. Are yours the same build as in the link (rims/spokes/hubs)?

You're the second one to recommend getting them tensioned. What, exactly, is this and why would it need to be done to new wheels?

at such a low price they're almost assuredly mass produced and each wheel isn't getting the proper care and attention a wheel being built from a good LBS would. this means they're probably not tensioned accurately which can cause a great deal of problems, even after only light use.

Which is what everyone thought about the cxp-22/formula wheels but every wheel that was actually tested upon receipt proved to be perfectly tensioned.

I suggest borrowing a tensionometer and testing them yourself then posting the results. If they need tensioned do it yourself or take them somewhere but there is no reason to spend money on it if it's not needed.

I found these and wrote and asked them more details on the hubs they are using in the build and received this response:

"Hello, all our formula hubs are sealed bearing, 130mm rear and 100mm front. The rear can be spaced out for 126mm or 135mm frames"

These are deep but I don't know anything about them.

Agreed, I've seen 3 sets of the formula/cxp22 wheels now and all had good, even tension. The one I rolf pressed had acceptable windup, pretty much as good as you're going to get without a rolf press.

I've had some Vuelta XRP pros on my roadie for about 2300 miles now and they are absolutely bombroof. Haven't trued them once, they are as perfect as the day I got them. I'm 150 lbs the bike is 21lbs, and I do a lot of bunny hopping and charging through potholes.

I went the CXP22/Formula machine-build route for my fixie, but even with my LBS tensioning the wheels before purchase (or so they claimed...probably didn't do squat to them) I got a bit of rub on the front after about 100 miles of easy riding. My next fixie will probably be sporting the Vuelta Pros or Starlites. The hubs are OEM (the lower end ones may be Jalco..?), spokes are straight gauge, and they usually go between $130 and $160 on ebay.

I was looking at the Vuelta rims for my next wheel build. Since since one of the IRO build kits comes with hubs, and a person can never have to many wheelsets i figure what what the hell. I like the fact that the Vueltas come in colors... hmmmm. thanks for the good review of them

I've been riding on the vuelta stylus for a while. THey've been pretty awesome for not spending much money. I think that you can get both rims, un-laced, for 60 bucks on ebay. That's why I got them and they've performed reallly well.
