Is Soma the only company that makes toe clips actually designed for double straps?

Are these the only clips actually made with two holes for double straps or am I just looking in all the wrong places? To my knowledge I've never seen MKS double toe clips, and any double strap pedal setup I see usually has single hole clips or these Somas.

yeah, and they suck.

are you talking about the soma double straps, or the double clips? it's general knowledge that their double straps suck and i plan on getting toshi as far as that.

the double clips, they're ****ty. I have them on my conversion and hate hate hate them. they dig into your foot, are too wide to allow the double straps to do what they're supposed to do (clamp down HARD)...anyways, yeah, I don't recommend them.

andre nickatina 04-22-07 11:33 PM

thanks for the heads up, both of those points seem really valid and i think now that i'll just keep my mks single clips since they've never given be a problem and the keirin guys don't seem to have an issue w/ running those same mks clips w/ double straps...

number18 04-22-07 11:43 PM

I vastly prefer the single clips, yeah. it's so much better to pull against leather than against steel...

The "keirin guys" aren't riding around on the streets with
chopped MTB riser bars and no brakes, either.

deathhare 04-23-07 06:32 AM

 what does that have to do with anything?

I'm pretty sure they aren't using double straps anyway.

gwhalin 04-23-07 07:31 AM

Yeah, I own a pair of these. They don't allow you to cinch down the straps as they are too wide. Took them on and went back to my MKS clips.

DeafLamb 04-23-07 07:47 AM

So how do you set up double straps w/ a single clip? And what mks clips are you guys refering to? I need a new clip strap setup. My foot always feels like its slipping out when I put a lot of up pressure on it. It sucks...

they're still putting a decent amount of abuse into their straps / clips, track sprinting and all. that and it exemplifies that if it works fine for them, why shouldn't it for anyone else?

Do they even use double straps though?

I'm sure that some do, but most of the photographs I've
seen of Japanese keirin racers show single-straps and
something like SIDI shoes.

el twe 04-23-07 10:12 AM

Pretty sure only single straps are NJS stamped.

andre nickatina 04-23-07 09:28 PM

eh, maybe i'm off but i don't really care. i just got some toshi doubles and mks sylvans today, now i need to figure out how to get these damn straps through the tiny holes of the pedal... agh.

Yeah, but can you even use double straps & a single clip? I think that they aren't compatible. Where would you thread the 2nd leather strap through since one clip can only hold the 1st leather strap part.

i think a good amount of people do this. the second "loose" strap just rests along the top. leather straps are pretty solid(granted there isn't too much slack) and don't slip around.

basically i wish i didn't have any problem using leather because trying to figure out a good nylon strap set up is killin' me. i'm currently trying out the soma singles. yeah the metal is kinda strange but i like the secure feeling. i'll take 'em on a long ride and see what happens.

drewcifer 04-23-07 10:19 PM

vegan?

that's what i'd do. i've never used leather, but feel a little odd buying it now that i've been converted to a 98% vegan...i've only seen leather doubles.

anyway, i don't see why that wouldn't work.

kyle! 04-23-07 10:35 PM

yeah, i thought i read somewhere that someone was thinking about maybe making some nylon doubles. but i'm not gonna hold my breath.

i've ridden leather straps but i wouldn't buy them. i have to admit though. i feel a little silly considering they ride way the heck better. whhyyyy won't someone make some rad kevlar straps or something?

Campy nylon straps seem to be a cut above the generic black nylon krap. They have stainless steel buckles as well.

I've never felt the need for doubles. I think they're like a 5-point racing harness for your regular car - sporty, kinda sexy overkill.

andre nickatina 04-23-07 11:37 PM

Alright I set up one Sylvan track ped w/ the Toshi doubles. You guys weren't lying when you said it SUCKS to install this setup... whoever said to cut the straps into a /\ and than let the pliers do the work was pretty spot on though.

For comparisons sake I rode w/ one GR-9 to single MKS strap, and one Sylvan track to double Toshi. Verrrrry noticable difference skidding with the double strap up front compared to the single strap GR-9 up front (I'm an ambidextrious skidder). People weren't lying when they said it's not even a comparison, I think I'm a convert to the world of double straps now.

The only bad thing other than installing them is it's harder to get your foot in and out of, but that's hardly much to complain about when you have such a secure feeling / added support for skids and spin.

I also rode someone's clipless setup today. I think for skids, double straps feel better, but for spin, clipless could probably be better... we'll see, I gotta get the other pedal set up w/ doubles tomorrow and this is all coming from 5 minute rides on each.........
