Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

chain size

is it worh getting a 1/8" chain? i got a great deal on some fixed cogs ($7 each 13, 14, 15T) but they're 1/8". would i be saving money by getting a 1/32" cog and chain? i know the 1/8 is stronger.

1/8 is also easier to tension.
i love 1/8!

also if your chainline is ever so slightly off, you can run a 3/32 ring and the chain will give you some leeway to straighten out that chainline!

how is a 1/8th easier to tension?

on a whole there is no difference in strength or performance between a 1/8th and 3/32ns chain. Both widths come in a variety from excellent to crappy. Both are available for single speed/track specific uses. Chain failure is 99.9% user error. Make sure you install it right. The major difference is weight and the fact that most track stuff is designed for 1/8th. That said I have Sugino 75 NJS track chainring in a 3/32 width. Mixing and matching can work but I do not recommend it as generally it causes noise.

its not? takes a lot more force to break a 2x4 in half than a pencil.
