Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Vertical Dropouts

Just got done with the 5boro bike tour. Loads of fun. While riding down the BQE we ended up cycling with a guy on a LeMond single speed. What makes this particularly interesting is that it was Tourmalet. The Tourmalet is a roadie with vertical dropouts. The guy wasn't even running it with a chain tensioner. Bad idea?! I've got an Etape I've been dying to do this to. But figured it would be a really bad idea...until I saw this dude today.

indeed. you can also figure out a magic gear which will put exactly the right amount of links for your vert. drops... a bit more work than eno though!

What trons said, plus using half links it's even easier.

If you can afford it I would go the with the ENO hub. If you decide to use the magic gear try this.

The magic gear is a fun little project that eventually becomes less and less fun, usually to the point where you either break down and get the ENO or start scrounging for a frame with horizontal dropouts. But that's just my experience. Enjoy.

or start using a file to make "adjustments" to your dropouts and axles. not pretty.

... this is actually my first +1 comment, I feel like a proper forum member now. Off to start a thread about if brakes are a good idea or not...

but seriously the ENO is cool, much faster and easier to set the tension than with track ends.

That's what I did.
I get about 2000 miles out of a chain before it stretches so much that despite the minor *adjustments*, it starts dropping.
Not too dissatisfied, but if I happen to have a bunch of cash burning a hole in my pocket at some point I may buy an ENO or the new frame I was always going to.

If you want your drivetrain to be nice and snug (ie. you hate play at the cranks), then go ENO or forget that frame.

You are more than a proper member.... I have a man-crush on your bike. It keeps me up at night and I think I have shown my girlfriend your website atleast four times despite her not knowing anything about bikes. [That was awkward... sorry]
